In a world where so many people from all spheres of influence are suffering and being plagued by this deadly virus that has spread and almost engulfed the whole world, it is of great importance to look at the way in which Christianity have done or need to do in response to HIV and AIDS. There are many people who have praised or still praise small Christian communities which have developed some social groups as a way of responding to the call of those in need of help, those who are suffering in one way or the other from HIV and AIDS. On the other hand some patients have experienced hell on earth due to the treatment they have undergone from Christians who preached sermons of doom to them. The mandate of this paper however, it is to explore the development and progress of the Christian Faith groups towards answering the call of the multitude that has been affected by HIV and AIDS. The paper seeks to applause or regard in high esteem the work done or that which is being done for the betterment of life for those suffering. On the other hand the paper will also look at the weaknesses or shortfalls of these Christian Faith groups that have contributed in the slow progress on prevention and care for the affected. The paper will also suggest the way forward in responding to the call of HIV victims and probable victims.
Perhaps it may help us clear the way if we begin by defining some terms that will repeatedly appear in this paper. The abbreviation HIV stands for Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Christian Communities refers to social groups with a common Christian faith who gather together to pray and serve people suffering and living with HIV and AIDS. The examples of these social groups are the Catholic Relief Services, Young Men or Women's Christian Associations, and Home Based Care Programme to mention but a few.
The Christian community has greatly improved in the manner in which it approached this vehemently burning issue of HIV and AIDS.
