America is a country that is constantly undergoing drastic changes and is moving forward into the 21st century at a hypnotic pace. New technology is constantly being developed. Today one can access their email through a cell phone and purchase a hybrid vehicle. Although America has been undergoing many changes throughout the decades, the morals and ethics of many people are still the same as they always have been. The thought of two people of the same sex being together as a couple causes many Americans to become uncomfortable. On the other hand, there are also some people who are open-minded to the idea and view the situation with the saying "live and let live." As hard as it seems to be for people to adapt to gay and lesbian partnership, it is even harder for those who already disagree to support gay marriage.
Marriage, by its most used definition, is the social institution under which a man and woman live as husband and wife by legal or religious commitments. What happens when a woman and another woman fall in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together? It is possible for the lesbian couple to live together forever, but in most states they cannot be recognized as a married couple. Why is it so important to be married, to have that "piece of paper"? .
To many people, being married to someone is more that just having it down in writing that you are with that person. Legal documents come in handy in several instances. One such instance is when a person becomes ill and their spouse is needed to make a medical decision. Also, it is more expensive to have legal documents, such as a Power of Attorney. If a gay couple is raising children together, issues arise when one of the parents die. If the couple is not married, whom does the child go to? Another instance is when buying a house a couple that is not married would be wise to have a Joint Tenancy in Common issued.
