The Formula One star suffered a severe head injury while he was skiing in the French Alps on December 29, 2013. Schumacher fell and struck a rock, forcing him to be airlifted to Grenoble Hospital, where he was placed in a medically-induced coma for six months, before undergoing two life-saving operations. The seven-time world champion’s condition has been kept under wraps ever since, with his family providing rare updates.

However, on his 50th birthday, a final interview just one month before the accident has come to light, showing exactly why he is a motorsport legend.

It shows Schumacher speaking candidly to Dutch broadcaster RTL 7 about his love for the sport.

He says: “Times have changed for the better.

“It is a different chapter but, through development, it has been interesting.

Just yesterday, Schumacher's wife Corinna offered a rare update on the racing legend’s health.

She said: "We are pleased and wholeheartedly thank you for celebrating Michael's 50th birthday with him and with us.

"You can be sure that he is in good hands and we are doing everything humanly possible to help him."

Mrs Schumacher then urged fans to respect the family's privacy over the "sensitive topic" of his health.
