Professor Jenny Hocking is an award-winning film script writer and author. She has been with Film Art Doco since its inception and has been involved in every major documentary project.

Biography
Professor Jenny Hocking is Research Professor and ARC Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award (DORA) Fellow in the National Centre for Australian Studies in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and a well-known biographer and script-writer and a highly regarded scholar and commentator on Australian politics and history, political biography, counter-terrorism and security matters.
Gough Whitlam: His Time, the much-anticipated second volume of Professor Hocking’s two- volume biography of the former Labor Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam was published in 2012 by Melbourne University Publishing and has been short-listed in several national literary awards including the National Biography Award, Queensland Literary Awards and for the Australian History Prize in the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards. The first volume, Gough Whitlam: A Moment in History, was published by Melbourne University Publishing in 2008 and was also short-listed in several national literary awards including the Magarey Medal for Biography, The Age Book of the Year and the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.
Publications
Jenny is a prolific writer and contributor to public debate on counter-terrorism and democracy, in her first book, Beyond Terrorism: the Development of the Australian Security State (Allen & Unwin. 1993) and Terror Laws: ASIO, Counter-terrorism and the Threat to Democracy (UNSW Press. 2004) as well as numerous book chapters, articles and opinion pieces.
She has co-edited, also with Associate Professor Colleen Lewis, the international collection Counter-terrorism and the Post-Democratic State published by Edward Elgar in 2007. Jenny has made submissions to several parliamentary inquiries into these developments and is a frequent commentator in Australian and international media on these and other contemporary political issues.
Jenny Hocking is the author of three major political biographies, including the two-volume biography of the former Labor Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, Gough Whitlam: His Time (Melbourne University Publishing/Miegunyah Press 2012) and Gough Whitlam: A Moment in History (Melbourne University Publishing/Miegunyah Press 2008/2009). Her previous biographies are of the former Attorney-General and High Court justice Lionel Murphy, Lionel Murphy: A Political Biography (Cambridge University Press. 1997, 2000), and of the Australian communist, political activist and author Frank Hardy, Frank Hardy: Politics Literature Life (Lothian Books. 2005). Lionel Murphy: A Political Biography was short-listed for the South Australian Literature Awards for best non-fiction in 1997, Frank Hardy: Politics Literature Life was short-listed in the 2006 NSW History Awards and Gough Whitlam: A Moment in History was short-listed for The Age Non-Fiction Book of the Year, the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards and the Prime Minister’s Awards for Literature 2009 and long-listed in the Walkley Awards non-fiction book 2009. Gough Whitlam: His Time was shortlisted for the Australian History Prize in the 2013 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.
Jenny co-wrote the award-winning documentary film about Lionel Murphy, Mr Neal is Entitled to be an Agitator (Film Art Doco, ABC-TV 1991). She also co-edited with Associate Professor Colleen Lewis the 2003 volume It’s Time Again: Whitlam and Modern Labor.
