I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore
We were on the trail at 4:30 a.m. in an attempt to summit two 14ers before the afternoon thunderstorms. We reached a saddle shortly after sunrise and turned around to see an ominous cloud behind us. At first I thought it was a lenticular cloud. Then, I got scared and thought it might be a funnel cloud. As it turned out, it was harmless. Sure was scary at 13,500 feet and a long walk from the tree line, though. For obvious reasons, you don't want to be caught up there during a lightning storm.
By the way, Andrew was only carrying a day pack. We set up a base camp down in the valley for our 4 nights in the backcountry. Our packs were quite a bit larger when full!
