Chelsea outcast Ben Chilwell is still expected to leave the club despite his recent surprise return to first-team training, sources have told Football Insider.

The left-back had been told he could leave Stamford Bridge in the summer after Enzo Maresca deemed him surplus to requirements.

However, the England international was recently brought back into the first-team training with the Blues.

Nevertheless, sources at Chelsea have said that Chilwell is still expected to look for a move somewhere else in January as there isn’t expected to be much game time available for him at his current club.

Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga sit above the England international in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

However, the 27-year-old now has the chance to impress Maresca as he is back training with the rest of the first-team squad after being on the sidelines for several months.

Ben Chilwell will have to try and fight for his place at Chelsea

Chilwell was named the club’s vice-captain last season, but an injury-plagued campaign led to him slipping down the pecking order.

The full-back has missed 445 days of football since he joined Chelsea in 2020 due to a variety of injuries.

The Blues had offered Man United the chance to sign him in the summer transfer window, but Football Insider revealed that United weren’t interested.

Chilwell has made 106 appearances for the club since joining but hasn’t played a single minute of football so far this season.

The left-back is under contract with the Premier League giants until 2027.
