The 12 Best Jobs For Women In 2014 (original) (raw)
Career services site CareerCast.com has found encouraging data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on women in the workforce. Often, reports from the BLS bring more bad news than good, like when the agency tracked the salary gap between men and women from 1979 to 2012 and found that as of 2012, women were still making less than 85% of their male co-workers’ salaries. Or when the BLS found that less than 25% of chief executive roles are held by women (less than 5% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women). It’s important (and easy) to get upset about workplace inequality, but CareerCast has decided, instead, to celebrate the fields in which women are already making strides and can expect employment opportunities in the coming years.
Thus CareerCast has released its list of the 12 best jobs for women in 2014. The list is based on two data sets from the BLS: annual average salary and the projected hiring outlook by 2022. The BLS calculates the projected hiring outlook for a profession by identifying the number of professionals in that job in 2012 and the predicted number of professionals who will hold that position in 2022. The number of professionals in 2012 is then subtracted from the forecast number. What is left over is the number of people expected to enter that career over a ten year period. That number, the net increase, is divided by the original number of professionals that held the job in 2012, resulting in the percentage increase that career can reasonably expect. This percentage is the projected hiring outlook by 2022. In making this list, CareerCast also factored in such criteria as stress, physical demands, and the percentage of women working in the field. The jobs are listed in alphabetical order, not ranked.
