Forward Madison Push Past Cleveland SC in U.S. Open Cup Home Opener (original) (raw)

Forward Madison FC continued their season with a home opening win against Cleveland SC in the 2nd Round of the U.S. Open Cup. The match kicked off at 7:05 pm CT on April 6th at Breese Stevens Field. Forward Madison and Cleveland started the match slowly with the Flamingos getting some early shots at Cleveland’s goalkeeper Conor Cable. Nazeem Bartman nearly opened the scoring once again for Forward Madison with a breakaway shot on goal in the 26th minute. Audi Jepson and Rojay Smith got some shots in before Justin Sukow finally managed to get one past the Cleveland goalkeeper in the 37th minute, thanks to an assist from Alann Torres. With the end of the first half approaching, Cesar Murrilo Jr. kicked in a thrilling last-minute goal in the 45+1 minute to pull the Flamingos out to a 2-0. Murillo’s goal was assisted by Cyrus Rad.

The second half kicked off with Coach Matt Glaeser subbing in Andrew Wheeler-Omuinu for Christian Enriquez. Forward Madison and Cleveland went back and forth to open the second half. In the 60th minute mark, Glaeser added a spark by adding Eric Leonard and Mikey Maldonado onto the pitch. The spark worked as offense came with ease for the Flamingos. At the 68th minute mark, a shot on goal by Alann Torres led to a rebound straight to Nazeem Bartman who punched in a goal to take a 3-0 lead. From then on, the Flamingos continued to apply pressure as they won 3-0 in the end.

“It feels great, obviously nice to get a result,” Head Coach Matt Glaeser said. “I’m pleased in general with the performance.”

Cesar Murillo described his feelings of being on the Breese Stevens pitch for the first time as a Flamingo. “It’s always great being at home and in front of the fans. They gave us the support we needed to come out big and win.”

“The fans are a big part of this club,” Justin Sukow said. “They are what drive us. It means a lot, we can’t wait to see them back out on Saturday!”

Looking ahead, the Flamingos will go on to battle Union Omaha in their home opener at Breese Stevens Stadium on Saturday, April 9th.
