Forward Madison Falls 2-0 to Minnesota United FC in U.S. Open Cup
Forward Madison continued their 2022 U.S. Open Cup run with a 2-0 loss against MLS club Minnesota United FC. The 3rd Round matchup kicked off at Breese Stevens Field on Wednesday, April 20th at 6:00 pm CT. Forward Madison and Minnesota United began the match rather slowly, with neither team able to get quality chances in the first 10 minutes. The Loons managed to control the possession and get some shots on goal in the 18th, 21st, and 23rd minute marks, but Forward Madison’s goalkeeper Phil Breno made some crucial saves to keep the score tied.
At the 29th minute mark, coach Matt Glaeser was forced to sub off Andrew Wheeler Omuinu after a leg injury. Justin Sukow subbed in for the midfielder. The end of the first half flew by as the Flamingos and Loons weren’t able to get much offense going. With six minutes of stoppage time added, a small scuffle broke out after a free kick into the box from Minnesota which led to yellow cards for both teams in the 45+3 minute. Cesar Murrilo Jr. was the Flamingo assessed with a yellow card.
The second half started off strong offensively for Forward Madison. At the 50th minute mark, Matheus Cassini got a close shot on goal thanks to a nice pass from Rojay Smith. Unfortunately for the Flamingo faithful, in the 52nd minute, Minnesota United’s Adrien Hunou managed to score a goal off a corner kick swung in by Joseph Rosales. In the 68th minute mark, Coach Glaeser subbed in Abdou Mbacke Thiam and Drew Conner to spark some energy into his squad for the final stretch. The spark worked as the Flamingos nearly scored off a corner in the 80th minute. However, at the 83rd minute mark, Minnesota United’s Brett Kallman headed in the Loons’ second goal of the night, again from a corner, to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead. The momentum continued to swing in Minnesota’s favor as Drew Conner was shown a red card in the 84th minute for a late challenge. The ball went back and forth for the remainder of the game as neither team got any further chances. Minnesota United FC advanced to the 4th Round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Next up on the schedule, the Flamingos will welcome Central Valley Fuego FC for a USL League One match on Saturday, April 30th at 5:00 pm CT.
