COTCHIN: ‘ZERO-TO-ONE PER CENT CHANCE’ DUSTY IS A SUN

Trent Cotchin has declared that “there is a zero-to-one per cent chance” that Dustin Martin “pulls on a Suns guernsey or any other guernsey for that matter”.

The three-time Norm Smith medallist retired in the days following Richmond’s Round 21 loss to North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium – his 302nd game in the yellow and black – but rumours have bubbled away all year long that he may be Gold Coast bound.

On Channel 7’s Talking Footy, Cotchin said that he can understand why Gold Coast and Hardwick would want Martin at their club but his former housemate spending more time in south-east Queensland is more likely linked to lifestyle than football.

“He was actually up on the Gold Coast the last time I spoke to him. He does love it up there but that’s not to say that he wants to play his footy up there,” Cotchin said.

When pressed by fellow panellist Tim Watson as to why he thought the chances of Martin running out People’s First Stadium in a red and yellow jumper were so slim, Cotchin admitted that his view was partly based on his emotional connection to Richmond and Martin.

“There’s probably a part of me that hopes it doesn’t happen because of the love I have, and I think it would be nice for him to end up a one-club player of the Richmond footy club,” Cotchin said

“Footy’s a bloody tough game - and maybe that’s the fresh start he needs, I don’t know – but to move away to a new environment, they’re building and it’s going to look different to the latter stages of his career looked like at the Tigers. It’s a big call.”

SYDNEY SHOW INTEREST IN FROST

AFL Media’s Josh Gabelich spoke on Insider Trading about the possibility of Hawthorn key defender Sam Frost heading north to the Sydney Swans.

The 31-year-old faces a selection squeeze as free agent Josh Battle has nominated the Hawks as his club of choice, while Tom Barrass has requested a trade from the West Coast Eagles to Waverley.

The Swans have needed to bring in more tall defensive cover since losing Paddy McCartin to concussion issues and speaking on SEN Breakfast, AFL Media’s Cal Twomey said that Sydney is one of several clubs to enquire about Frost.

“They (Sydney) have registered an interest in Sam Frost. He’s in a funny position given the Hawks are bringing in Tom Barrass and Josh Battle.

“So two key position defenders coming in. What does that mean for Sam Frost? Clubs have asked the question and the Swans are in that group.

“Frost is contracted for next year after hitting a trigger for 2025 earlier this season, but you do wonder what that squeeze would look like in that (defensive) group.”
