Gaming Target is a video game news and reviews website started by Matt Swider in 1999 and continues in 2021 under the leadership of Brandon Hofer. The website publishes daily content and deals-related news for gamers and by gamers. Throughout the years, we've seen competitors, parent companies and media peers come and go, including UGO (where we were regularly syndicated) and The Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine (where we were featured in an issue. Gaming Target remains operational with a vast database of new and old games reviewed in its database, now 22 years old. Gaming Target has been able to remain in operation for 22 years thanks to the support of our readers and small affiliate commissions we may get on some of our links. For example, as an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We also earn commissions from Walmart, Best Buy, Target and GameStop. However, our video game and tech-buying advice is provided to our readers at no charge and our recommendations are independently picked based on their merits. We update every day with a mix of reviews, previews and features. News reports are also filed throughout the day. Gaming Target was founded by Matt Swider and when it launched on February 17, 1999, the site was Nintendo-based and focused solely on the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color. On September 9, 1999, the same day as the system's North American launch, we began covering the Dreamcast. That was also the day the GamingTarget.com domain went live.The Gaming Target had a redesign on May 15, 2001 and the site has been in continuous operation ever since. An expansion came with this new design as sections were added for the then-new PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance and GameCube. A section devoted to the Xbox would open in October 2001 during the run-up to that console's November launch.In September 2002, Gaming Target was redesigned again and became an affiliate of UGO. Matt Swider took a more administrative role in the day-to-day operation of the site and John Scalzo was elevated to the position of Managing Editor, a position he held for nearly eight years.In late 2004, the site underwent a fourth redesign, which it currently uses, and opened sections covering the Nintendo DS and Playstation Portable. In May 2005, just before E3, Gaming Target went "next-gen" as sections for the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii were added. Coverage of PC games and Nokia's N-Gage were also added at this time.Finally, the Retro channel was opened in June 2006, providing coverage of "retired" console, handheld and PC games. As each new console comes out, we continue to add new sections as coverage and reporting become warranted.
