What is Respiratory System?
The respiratory system diagram shows a network of organs and tissues which are essential for breathing. It includes the airways, lungs, blood vessels, and the muscles powering the lungs. Nose
- Human nostrils have a cartilaginous structure known as the septum, dividing them into right and left passages.
- Tiny hair follicles lining the interior protects against foreign pathogens, while also adding humidity to inhaled air.
Larynx
- Located at the front of the neck and is framed by two cartilaginous chords
- Plays dual role in vocalization and respiration.
- During swallowing, the epiglottis folds over the top of the windpipe, preventing food from entering the larynx.
Pharynx
- The nasal chambers connect to the pharynx which is a passage for air and food.
- The epiglottis, an elastic cartilage, directs air to the lungs and food to the gastrointestinal tract.

Trachea
- The trachea, or windpipe, extends from below the larynx downward into the neck.
- Its walls are reinforced by C-shaped cartilaginous rings, providing structural support and ensuring it remains open for airflow.
- Continuing into the chest, the trachea divides into two bronchi, each leading to a lung.
Bronchi
- The trachea divides into two bronchi, each entering a lung separately.
- These bronchi branch into secondary and tertiary bronchioles, eventually leading to small air sacs known as alveoli.
- Alveoli are single-celled structures with thin walls that enable the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules with the bloodstream.
Lungs
- The lungs are spongy organs located on either side of the heart within the thoracic cavity.
- Their main role is to facilitate the exchange of gases between the blood and the air.
