The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) is a communication protocol used for reading, posting, and transferring Usenet articles across the Internet. Usenet is a worldwide distributed discussion system that relies on NNTP to manage the exchange of news articles between servers and clients. Unlike earlier methods that relied on batch processing to distribute news articles. NNTP operates over a reliable stream-oriented transport typically TCP. NNTP allows a client to connect to a news server, read articles, and post new content. The protocol also supports the transfer of articles between news servers ensuring that news is propagated efficiently across the network.

What is NNTP?

**NNTP stands for **Network news transfer protocol. This protocol is used to connect **‘Usenet’ (A collection of topic discussions organized by various newsgroups) to the internet all over the world. NNTP is added as a client to Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer, and other web browsers. Alternatively, other browsers also use **newsreaders.

History

Earlier the news sharing process over the internet was different. There was news of ibis about providing a centralized news service. Such a distributed file system may work well with other computers and also with other identical operating systems but the problem is that such a system cannot offer service to a wide range of client systems. That was when NNTP came into the picture, It became easy for the USENET servers to talk to each other over the internet using NNTP.

Advantages

• Command names are easy, for example, ARTICLE, IHAVE, LIST, etc.
• User can use any news easily
• Does not require a central server
• Both server/server and client/server communication is supported

Disadvantage

• User authentication is not a feature of NNTP.
• It supports only a little amount of multimedia as, at its most basic, it was developed for text-based discussions.
• Since NNTP does not provide native encryption, data transmission is not safe.
• Conversation threading is not supported.
