Thinking about the Poem

Que 1. (i) “Beneath all uniforms ...” What uniforms do you think the poet is speaking about?

Answer-

The poet here is speaking about the different dresses that people from various countries wear but beneath all this, lays the human body which is the same.

(ii) How does the poet suggest that all people on earth are the same?

Answer-

The poet says that nobody is different & peculiar. No country is foreign. Beneath all uniforms, a single body breathes. Moreover, everywhere the land is the same.

Que 2. In stanza 1, find five ways in which we all are alike. Pick out the words.

Answer-

In stanza 1, the poet says that there is no difference between the body of a citizen of one country & of another. We have the same kind of body; we wear the same kind of clothes. We walk on the same planet & each individual's end is the same.

Certain phrases & words in the poem tell us that we all are alike, these are :

Que 4. “...whenever we are told to hate our brothers ...” When do you think this happens? Why? Who ‘tells’ us? Should we do as we are told at such times? What does the poet say?

Answer-

At times, selfish people instigate the innocent in order to harm others. They do it for their own benefit. The common or ordinary man falls prey to their tricks & starts hating his fellow humans. They tell them to cause riots. The poet says that one should not follow anybody’s advice blindly. One must rise beyond these boundaries & think of the betterment of humankind & profess universal brotherhood & respect for all. Repeatedly, the poet has said that there is no difference between them & the foreigners. People all over are the same.
