UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. It is a device that supplies power to devices for a fixed amount of time without stopping even when there are problems occurring with utility power and other power sources. When power failures such as power outages occur, computer devices such as servers and workstations may break down, leading to various problems such as the loss of important data and program malfunction

History

John Hanley was the first person to invent UPS. John Hanley completed the first Uninterruptible Power Supply in 1934. After the invention of UPS, he said, “Apparatus For Maintaining An Unfailing and Uninterrupted Supply of Electrical Energy".
There are three types of UPS:

• Online UPS
• Offline UPS
• Electronic Generators

Characteristics

• It prevents hardware damage that is done by surges and spikes.
• It prevents data loss and corruption.
• High levels of reliability and efficiency
• It provides availability for networks and other applications while preventing downtime
• Relatively low cost, weight, and size requirements

Advantages

• Emergency power supply
• provides surge protection
• Battery life is more
• Uninterruptible power supply price for maintenance is cheaper and thus are affordable.
• Protects from uncertain data loss

Disadvantages

• It is not reliable
• The Maintenance Cost is higher because the UPS batteries do not last forever, UPS batteries can last about five or ten years, so new batteries must be purchased.
• Installing the UPS is not easy and we need professionals for installing it.
