Signal Box, Haltwhistle Railway Station

Signal Box, Haltwhistle Railway Station

The wooden signal box on a brick base is located at the east end of the down platform (serving Carlisle). It was constructed in 1901 with both sides cantilevered-out over a narrow brick base presumably because of space restrictions. The signal box was decommissioned in 1993 but still used as an office. A North East Railway iron footbridge provides a crossing of the main line just west of the signal box NY7063 : Haltwhistle Railway Station.

John Webb gave me the information that the signal box was between the main line and the line serving the bay platform for the Alston branch trains, hence the need to construct it as seen. The box is Grade II listed (see LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) as part of the group of station buildings and the footbridge.

Haltwhistle Station's signal box was taken out of use in 1993, following re-signalling to colour lights. It was replaced by a smaller prefabricated signal box, which is located around 145 yards (133m) to the west of the former.
