Contains at least one character who may end up on many "The fictional character I hate most" lists, but there are plenty of likeable ones too. The novel also expanded my Strine vocabulary; after some help I now know the meaning of "a half slab," "footy pie," "utes" and "glutes." Still in the dark about op-shop chairs and SCOBY though. Some of the ruminations about time are interesting, and as always Winterson is brilliant at capturing those lyric moments in life at which time seems to stop. The early descriptions of the life of the millionaire businessman and his entourage reminded me of Don DeLillo's "Cosmopolis," and I wondered if this might be a less flaunted intertext. (p. 107 of the Random House ed.)I was puzzled by this as I could not think of any Swiss governess or female tutor in Conrad. But after a little digging I discover that in "The Rings of Saturn" Sebald writes about "ungainly Mlle Durand from Switzerland" (page 106 in the Vintage translation). This is the governess mentioned by Conrad in the third section of "A Personal Record". However Conrad does not state that she was Swiss, and I have confirmed from another source that she was French.
