ambitions - tell an entertaining adventure story - and achieves them splendidly. The execution is outstanding: the simple, straightforward language, the balance of detail and action, the character portrayals. When the book appeared one of its reviewers put the book down on the grounds that it doesn't contain any greater lesson or ideological, philosophical background. Thanks god it doesn't! There is plenty of half-baked, pedestrian philosophy / sociology / science / etc. in literature, and not enough good story telling. Especially these days when visual media and social media dominates the imagination, and many writers of lesser creative powers recycle and reference tropes and memes of these media, reading a book that is entertaining as a book is refreshing.Bravo for good stories, bravo for simplicity and bravo for being honest about the realities of life without being grim or despairing. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 1 | # times read 1 | date started Oct 08, 2024 | date read Oct 23, 2024 | date added Oct 08, 2024 | owned | format Mass Market Paperback | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Time for Outrage: Indignez-vous! | title Time for Outrage: Indignez-vous! | author Hessel, Stéphane | isbn 1455509728 | isbn13 9781455509720 | asin 1455509728 | num pages 48pp | avg rating 3.61 | num ratings 5,128 | date pub 1997 | date pub edition Sep 20, 2011 | Istvan's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Sep 06, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Princess Saves Herself in This One (Women Are Some Kind of Magic, #1) | title The Princess Saves Herself in This One(Women Are Some Kind of Magic, #1) | author Lovelace, Amanda | isbn 1532913680 | isbn13 9781532913686 | asin 1532913680 | num pages 156pp | avg rating 3.82 | num ratings 148,332 | date pub Apr 23, 2016 | date pub edition Apr 23, 2016 | Istvan's rating did not like it | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 1 | date started not set | date read Jan 2024 | date added Sep 02, 2024 | owned | format Paperback | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Tailor of Gloucester (World of Beatrix Potter, #3) | title The Tailor of Gloucester(World of Beatrix Potter, #3) | author Potter, Beatrix | isbn 0723247722 | isbn13 9780723247722 | asin 0723247722 | num pages 57pp | avg rating 4.08 | num ratings 6,871 | date pub Oct 1903 | date pub edition 2002 | Istvan's rating liked it | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 1 | date started not set | date read Jan 2024 | date added Sep 02, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Collected Short Stories of Anton Chekhov | title The Collected Short Stories of Anton Chekhov | author Chekhov, Anton | isbn | isbn13 | asin B0BMGDJVLS | num pages 3,782pp | avg rating 0.00 | num ratings 0 | date pub unknown | date pub edition Nov 13, 2022 | Istvan's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 1 | date started Aug 11, 2024 | date read not set | date added Aug 11, 2024 | owned | format Kindle Edition | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Austerlitz | title Austerlitz | author Sebald, W.G. | isbn 0140297995 | isbn13 9780140297997 | asin 0140297995 | num pages 415pp | avg rating 3.99 | num ratings 23,598 | date pub Nov 2001 | date pub edition Jul 04, 2002 | Istvan's rating did not like it | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review The unbearable dullness of reading, this book is.An unimaginative and boring work tangentially related to - but not saying anything new or insightful The unbearable dullness of reading, this book is.An unimaginative and boring work tangentially related to - but not saying anything new or insightful about - an important and dark hour of history.A mentally ill, professionally burnt out, awkward to the point of asocial, older person - as if they didn't have enough problems already - discovers around the age of 60 that they were sent away as a child from their Jewish family in 1938 to shield them from the Nazi menace. The title is the name of this person. They don't know anything about their parents, only about the Welsh couple who raised them, and try to find out, with predictably horrible discoveries resulting.Their mental illness and incoherence as a person is then presented as somehow resulting from this lack of knowledge of personal history, and lack of knowability, since most of their known family has been murdered or has disappeared. The style and content do reach some peaks at rare points, but almost always when the writer brings their narrator and the main character Austerlitz down from the heights of commenting on Austerlitz's flat and flatly described inner life. The book is strong when it does engage with particulars - the story of the people who brought Austerlitz up, or of his childhood friend's family, as well as when specific architecture is discussed - but much of the rest is like wandering in fog. If we are supposed to feel while reading how the main character feels, that's a success. Whether that's an experience worth having is another question (it is not). At its best it resembles listening to an highly intelligent friend who is most likely a researcher, perhaps in history or literature. At its worst it is like reading poor romantic works. The style, while fluid and occasionally lyrical, is riddled with cloudy phrases like 'I could feel the loss of memories', 'I could feel memories emerging', 'it was as if the past had been revealed to me suddenly', and so on, and so on, and so on... Show, don't tell would have been something to keep in mind for Sebald. Or at least don't tell it a hundred times. There is also a lot of losing the thread, and of unexplainably standing around in architecturally interesting, complex places. Sometimes the latter yields clever comments on the buildings and their history, but only when it is tied to particular details. The rest is more hazy, longwinded monologue by Austerlitz on how he felt (mostly confused and melancholic), i.e., bosh.Someone compared this to Bernhardt's books. Well, never have I read a more superficial comparison. Bernhardt's characters act and feel, have relationships, are active, working, creating, and intense in their emotional and mental lives. Sebald's Austerlitz is swimming in a fog. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 1 | date started Aug 11, 2024 | date read Sep 12, 2024 | date added Aug 11, 2024 | owned | format Paperback | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover From Action to Ethics: A Pluralistic Approach to Reasons and Responsibility | title From Action to Ethics: A Pluralistic Approach to Reasons and Responsibility | author Sandis, Constantine | isbn 1350235113 | isbn13 9781350235113 | asin 1350235113 | num pages 286pp | avg rating 4.00 | num ratings 1 | date pub unknown | date pub edition Feb 22, 2024 | Istvan's rating really liked it | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review Constantine Sandis is one of the most important philosophers alive and working on action, agency and related topics. These essays appeared throughout Constantine Sandis is one of the most important philosophers alive and working on action, agency and related topics. These essays appeared throughout a long time, and Sandis updated them a bit for the volume. It is really worth reading for everyone who is into any of the topics touched upon - it is demanding, but rewarding. Since the topics are ethics, action, agency, moral psychology, reasons, and motivation, there are many points where one can reflect on events in one's own life and feel that some new insight has been obtained. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 1 | date started Jul 19, 2024 | date read Sep 27, 2024 | date added Jul 19, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Der Keller: Eine Entziehung | title Der Keller: Eine Entziehung | author Bernhard, Thomas | isbn 3423014261 | isbn13 9783423014267 | asin B081487KCJ | num pages 144pp | avg rating 4.22 | num ratings 1,192 | date pub 1976 | date pub edition Feb 01, 1979 | Istvan's rating really liked it | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review Another banger.Straight, honest, musical.Bernhard tells a story and tells it as it is: as the narrator experienced it and sees it. There is no concess Another banger.Straight, honest, musical.Bernhard tells a story and tells it as it is: as the narrator experienced it and sees it. There is no concession for 'artifice', no attempt to be more realistic or naturalistic or objective in some constructed sense than one can be about one's own life. The story is almost an anti-bildungsroman. The narrator develops despite the challenges of his life, not due to them, and is saved by his own somewhat mad and haphazard escape attempts, not due to benevolent helpers, meaningful encounters. It is mostly luck and impulse. And even so, at the end, what does it all matter? Nothing. Alles ist egal. It is all the same.As all texts of Bernhard, this one is also carefully composed and musical. Bernhard was a theatre and music person, and as such the book considers tempo changes, the swings of tone, register, emotion, characters came and go as if on a stage, the scenes are sketched out, made vivid like a background set, and at the end... there is a - kind of - reckoning. An outstanding experience to read, but don't expect to be made happy. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 1 | date started Jun 14, 2024 | date read Jul 19, 2024 | date added Jun 14, 2024 | owned | format Paperback | actions view (with text) | | | |
