The purpos Although this book starts out a bit slow, it is a thorough and important history of the associations that sprang up in the years 1866-1896. The purpose of each of the organizations that are covered, whether they aspired to egalitarian, and whether they succeeded. The most racist groups were in the South although the North was no paradise of egalitarianism- particularly as Jim Crow took hold. The Grange is covered as one of the earliest of the period. Although it advertised itself as egalitarian, it really was not. Women were allowed in the organization but seem to have very little opportunity to achieve leadership positions. The Grange grew its organization not only in the states but in several European countries as well. African Americans were excluded but that wasn't included in their literature, at least initially but as Reconstruction began to near its end, it became more racist in its approach. Several women's groups were highlighted and it seems that those groups containing white women from plantations had no time for belonging to integrated groups- not surprisingly. The Knights of Labor received a lot of attention, especially one of its heads, Terrence Powderly. Powderly at least tried to be more inclusive but was pressured to keep the races separate. Still, some groups did contain African American members or formed chapters of their own. The Knights fought for favorable conditions in the workplace and met with some success. They became quite influential around the country. The Populists are also discussed in the book. Initially, they welcomed African Americans but also bowed to the pressure from white supremacists and became segregated. In terms of political power, the Populists were able to send several men to Congress and were able to achieve some of their goals. Generally, although a few of them tried, these groups met with little or no success in creating bonds between races and genders. It was a time of great upheaval following the Civil War and although Radical Reconstruction may have created hope in the country that we might solve the problem of white supremacy, they never did. We still haven't. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 1 | # times read 1 | date started Nov 13, 2024 | date read Nov 18, 2024 | date added Nov 13, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Happiest Man on Earth: The Beautiful Life of an Auschwitz Survivor | title The Happiest Man on Earth: The Beautiful Life of an Auschwitz Survivor | author Jaku, Eddie | isbn 0063097702 | isbn13 9780063097704 | asin B08LVS5Q9K | num pages 212pp | avg rating 4.62 | num ratings 93,738 | date pub Jul 28, 2020 | date pub edition May 04, 2021 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Nov 01, 2024 | owned | format Kindle Edition | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union | title The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union | author Puleo, Stephen * | isbn 1250276276 | isbn13 9781250276278 | asin 1250276276 | num pages 464pp | avg rating 4.52 | num ratings 97 | date pub Apr 23, 2024 | date pub edition Apr 23, 2024 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 31, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Conclave | title Conclave | author Harris, Robert * | isbn 0091959160 | isbn13 9780091959166 | asin 0091959160 | num pages 484pp | avg rating 4.00 | num ratings 36,874 | date pub Sep 22, 2016 | date pub edition Oct 25, 2016 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 31, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic: Reconstruction, 1860-1920 | title The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic: Reconstruction, 1860-1920 | author Sinha, Manisha | isbn 1631498444 | isbn13 9781631498442 | asin 1631498444 | num pages 592pp | avg rating 4.22 | num ratings 110 | date pub Mar 26, 2024 | date pub edition Mar 26, 2024 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 30, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Autocracy, Inc. | title Autocracy, Inc. | author Applebaum, Anne | isbn 0241627893 | isbn13 9780241627891 | asin 0241627893 | num pages 224pp | avg rating 4.26 | num ratings 3,577 | date pub Jul 23, 2024 | date pub edition Jul 23, 2024 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 24, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover No Democracy Lasts Forever: How the Constitution Threatens the United States | title No Democracy Lasts Forever: How the Constitution Threatens the United States | author Chemerinsky, Erwin | isbn 1324091584 | isbn13 9781324091585 | asin 1324091584 | num pages 240pp | avg rating 3.94 | num ratings 105 | date pub unknown | date pub edition Aug 20, 2024 | Colleen's rating it was amazing | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review Chemerinsky is a well respected constitutional expert and dean of the law school at Berkeley. The last book by him that I read was about what a hoax t Chemerinsky is a well respected constitutional expert and dean of the law school at Berkeley. The last book by him that I read was about what a hoax that originalism is and he made a very strong argument. This book asserts that No Democracy Lasts Forever and so far in history that has proven true. Living at a time when our democracy is very much endangered, the author begins with the premise that the primary cause for this state of affairs is the Constitution itself. It was written by a group of elites who lived over 200 years ago in a small, agrarian country where slavery was prevalent. The problems he states are first that slavery has left a legacy that is felt to this day. The issue of equality has still not been solved and the document, although it does not mention the word slavery even once, protected an institution that is antithetical anywhere where is the premise of liberty. There is also the electoral college whose origins were tied into slavery and to small states desiring more say in elections. The Senate is another of the weaknesses sited. It flies in the face of any concept of democracy for every state to have the same representation regardless of population. He sites gerrymandering as a huge obstacle to democracy, especially when it has become an art form largely because to computer programs that can produce thousands of divisions of districts. It is just up to politicians then to decide which will benefit their party the most and then apply them. Although both parties have gerrymandered district boundaries, it is the Republican Party that has used the method just described to make votes so unrepresentative of the actual numbers. There are states where votes for Democrats are 60% of the total vote compared with 40% for Republicans and yet with the districts drawn as they are, in one case, Republicans end up with 13 seats and Democrats only 5. The Supreme Court is another problem. In the beginning, people's life expectancy was much shorter so justices might be on the bench for 15 years, if they are lucky but now, they can remain on the bench for 40 or more years. Filibustering is another issue that weakens our democracy as well as amending the Constitution. As has been shown, there are many reasons that our democracy is threatened. The country has not been so divided since the Civil War and there are reasons to be concerned about what might happen in the future. Chermerinsky offers several possible solutions but none of them may be possible in the country with its current divisions.Amending the Constitution could fix all problems (except for the Senate) but this process is painfully difficult as evidenced by the fact that since 1791 there have been only 17 amendments passed. We could also replace the current constitution with another one but there is the danger that what might result could be worse than what we have. It is possible to make many reforms without amendments but partisanship makes that almost impossible. Finally, there is the possibility of secession- but that did not work out so well the last time it was tried. Because of the conditions in the country, there have been 2 presidential elections in the 21st century where the winner of the popular vote has lost the electoral vote. Chemerinsky believes that that will happen more frequently going forward. The author concludes by expressing his hope that the path we are currently on will somehow sort itself and we will return to a saner time- but there is nothing to suggest that that will happen anytime soon. Chemerinsky's work is thoughtful and well researched. It is always interesting to read his thoughts so I recommend the book although for me it is rather depressing because there is so much truth in what he says. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 3 | votes 8 | # times read 1 | date started Oct 22, 2024 | date read Oct 25, 2024 | date added Oct 22, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Message | title The Message | author Coates, Ta-Nehisi | isbn 0593230388 | isbn13 9780593230381 | asin 0593230388 | num pages 232pp | avg rating 4.57 | num ratings 8,411 | date pub Oct 01, 2024 | date pub edition Oct 01, 2024 | Colleen's rating it was amazing | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review Once again, Coates has writing is beautiful and poetic, and once again, it is much more than that. He writes of his visit to Africa and how it felt like going home but what struck me most was his visit to Palestine. He says that the experience of the Palestinian people is similar to the experience of African Americans; particularly under Jim Crow. The legal requirements of separation and unequal treatment that both have received struck him very strongly. The way he writes about his time in Palestine mirrors the documented history that I have read about recently. I recall reading Leon Uris' QB7 many years ago and believing that Israel was a well deserved democracy for a people that had suffered so much. Israel has been presented as the only democracy in the Middle East but that is only partially true. For Israeli's it is indeed a democracy but for the people who inhabited that land for the last 1000 years, it does not even resemble one. Coates describes how Palestinians face fierce restrictions about where they travel and where they live. And they live with the fear that they may be pushed out of their homes losing everything because more "settlers" want their land. This has been going on for 75 years and Palestinians occupy less and less of their own land. One reaches the point where it is reasonable to redefine exactly who are the terrorists and who are the victims. And for an American, it is very difficult knowing that the Israeli government carries out all of this with the support and money that we give them. I could go on and on but I will not except to say that it is about time that we as a country stop supporting what is easily ethnic cleansing and quite possibly genocide. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 7 | # times read 1 | date started Oct 21, 2024 | date read Oct 22, 2024 | date added Oct 17, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover LBJ's 1968: Power, Politics, and the Presidency in America's Year of Upheaval | title LBJ's 1968: Power, Politics, and the Presidency in America's Year of Upheaval | author Longley, Kyle | isbn 1107193036 | isbn13 9781107193031 | asin 1107193036 | num pages 361pp | avg rating 4.19 | num ratings 186 | date pub Mar 31, 2018 | date pub edition Mar 31, 2018 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 17, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Red Heat: Conspiracy, Murder, and the Cold War in the Caribbean | title Red Heat: Conspiracy, Murder, and the Cold War in the Caribbean | author Tunzelmann, Alex von | isbn 0805090673 | isbn13 9780805090673 | asin 0805090673 | num pages 464pp | avg rating 4.28 | num ratings 562 | date pub Mar 29, 2011 | date pub edition Mar 29, 2011 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 17, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Gallipoli | title Gallipoli | author Hart, Peter * | isbn 1846681618 | isbn13 9781846681615 | asin 1846681618 | num pages 534pp | avg rating 4.02 | num ratings 424 | date pub 2011 | date pub edition Jan 01, 2013 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 16, 2024 | owned | format Paperback | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Time of the Child | title Time of the Child | author Williams, Niall * | isbn 1639734201 | isbn13 9781639734207 | asin 1639734201 | num pages 304pp | avg rating 4.39 | num ratings 126 | date pub Nov 19, 2024 | date pub edition Nov 19, 2024 | Colleen's rating | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review None | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 0 | # times read 0 | date started not set | date read not set | date added Oct 16, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view | | | | | checkbox | position | cover I Saw Death Coming: A History of Terror and Survival in the War Against Reconstruction (Wolf Brother) | title I Saw Death Coming: A History of Terror and Survival in the War Against Reconstruction | author Williams, Kidada E. * | isbn 1635576636 | isbn13 9781635576634 | asin 1635576636 | num pages 384pp | avg rating 4.15 | num ratings 278 | date pub Jan 17, 2023 | date pub edition Jan 17, 2023 | Colleen's rating it was amazing | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review In this excellent book on Reconstruction, the author extensively researches the plight of African Americans. The Reconstruction has traditionally been In this excellent book on Reconstruction, the author extensively researches the plight of African Americans. The Reconstruction has traditionally been overlooked or for lost causers, painted to be a time where horrible people from the North invaded and destroyed the place. Fortunately, more recent scholarship has been correcting that nonsense. What this book does is describe the lives of freedmen and detail the horrendous abuse that was done to them by the racists in the South. People who had been able to purchase land and begin to make a life for themselves moving toward prosperity were the victims of the worst terrorism that has ever been perpetrated in this country. Moreover, they had no recourse after it happened and the strikes, as they were referred to by the victims, never just occurred once. The Klan or whatever white terrorists that were roaming the area at any particular time, came back repeatedly. The goal was not alone to steal and destroy any property that the people may have accumulated, but to prevent them practicing their vote or any other rights that they were so recently accorded. They wanted to make sure that blacks knew their place and kowtowed to the white race. These terrorists were not satisfied to go after the head of the household (although the man was their prime target), they brutalized their wives and their children as well. There is a description of a 3 week old baby being hurled across a room. And fighting back wasn't really an option since the terrorists were well-armed and traveled in large groups. There was virtually no hope of justice being done because those in charge either did not care or were one of the raiding party. In one instance, there is a story of a man having been terribly beaten and searching for the doctor. He was unable to find him until it emerged that the doctor was amongst the terrorists who had brutalized the man and his family.Anyone who has any doubt that there should be reparations for African Americans should read this book- along with the other scholarship which argues for it. Williams argues with compassion and does it vey articulately. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 5 | # times read 1 | date started Oct 16, 2024 | date read Oct 18, 2024 | date added Oct 16, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017 | title The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017 | author Khalidi, Rashid | isbn 1627798552 | isbn13 9781627798556 | asin 1627798552 | num pages 336pp | avg rating 4.49 | num ratings 21,056 | date pub Jan 28, 2020 | date pub edition Jan 28, 2020 | Colleen's rating it was amazing | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review This is an extremely important book about a subject that has haunted the world for over a century. Since Zionists set their sites on Palestine and their homeland, the indigenous people have known little more than heartache, dispossession, war, and death. From Balfour's Declaration to the present, the rights and needs of the Palestinian people have been ignored or pushed aside in favor of the Zionists who, through ethnic cleansing and worse, have taken possession of most of Palestine. Khalidi presents a cogent, articulate, and thoroughly researched history in that war torn country. Himself and his family have been witnesses as events have unfolded and although the book is written from a Palestinian perspective, the authors view remains aware of the mistakes and atrocities that have occurred. From the Balfour Declaration when Britain announced the creation of the Israeli state, they subsequently set the pattern of settler colonialism that has persisted to this day. From Balfour's proclamations that Palestinians are inconsequential and should have no role in the country, to pouring money into the country, a problem that seems to have no solution has plagued the world. After the creation of Israel in 1948, the U.S. became the primary contributor to Israeli supremacy in a land from which none of them were born but where Palestinians have lived for over a millennium. From the time the U.S became involved, it has stood on the side of the Israelis regardless of what they did. Ethnic cleansing has pushed the indigenous people from their land, stolen or torn down their houses, businesses, and mosques while the world did nothing. Successive U.S. governments have a lot to answer for. That said, the author is not blind to the failures on the part of Palestinian leaders who were in over their heads with well trained Israeli diplomats and leaders who imposed their will upon the land. The failure of the PLO to adequately represent their people has not helped. According to Khalidi, perhaps the greatest mistake Palestinians have made in attempting to negotiate a settlement has been to assume that the U.S. has been an objective and honest broker. It has not been, allowing Israel always to dictate the terms of any agreement, without regard to the needs of the Palestinians and then pouring billions of dollars into the Israeli government. The Israeli's have been very adept at presenting themselves as an endangered country at the mercy of the Arab countries surrounding it when nothing can be further from the truth. Courtesy of the U.S., Israel have the best equipped and trained military in the Middle East and other countries in the area fear them. Given the current war in the area it is particularly important for Americans to become educated about what is happening and put pressure on our government to be an honest broker. It is particularly important for Palestinians to recognize that the U.S. is on the side of Israel and to negotiate based on that reality. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 5 | # times read 1 | date started Oct 06, 2024 | date read Oct 09, 2024 | date added Oct 06, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover Sanctuary | title Sanctuary | author Faulkner, William | isbn 0679748148 | isbn13 9780679748144 | asin 0679748148 | num pages 317pp | avg rating 3.63 | num ratings 13,966 | date pub 1931 | date pub edition Dec 06, 1993 | Colleen's rating it was amazing | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review Faulkner's Santuary is the tale of an upper class college girl who is abducted and raped by the character Popeye in a seedy town in prohibition Tennes Faulkner's Santuary is the tale of an upper class college girl who is abducted and raped by the character Popeye in a seedy town in prohibition Tennessee. For the majority of Americans, it was wrongly decided and has put many women in a very medically dangerous position as a result. But at the end of the day, the anti abortion people were much better organized and better funded than the pro-choice people. As the writer explains, most people took Roe as "unoverturnable". People simply did not believe that the Court would ever do it, even as they chipped away at the decision over the years. In recent years, there have been a myriad of laws passed (primarily in the south) to restrict its practice; most of which were ruled unconstitutional. The final blow was Mitch McConnell's refusal to allow Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland a hearing of any kind arguing that it was too close to the election for it to go ahead even though the election was 9 months away. The election of Trump meant that he would make the appointment instead and his choice came from the Federalist Society's list of acceptable, anti abortion judges. His second nominee was Gorsich and finally, when Ruth Bader Ginsberg died at the end of Trump's term, McConnell once again chose to proceed on a purely partisan manner by allowing the nomination of Coney-Barrett. This time however, he turned his previous argument on its head arguing for the importance of proceeding. Despite the lies they told in their confirmation hearings, it was clear to anyone who listened that they would vote to overturn Roe. There was now a majority of originalist judges on the court- a belief that the vast majority of constitutional experts agree is not legitimate. Since times have changed, it is impossible to discern what the framers would have thought. The most obvious example has to do with the internet. Since no such thing existed at the time, judges cannot possibly know what they would have thought. Moreover, it has been convincingly argued that when originalists make their decisions, they are soley based on their own beliefs. The author acknowledges that it will be a long time before this decision is thrown out but they strongly urge people to fight to change laws in the states and to elect members of Congress who will support a law reinstating Roe. This is a timely and well researched book. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 2 | votes 10 | # times read 1 | date started Sep 27, 2024 | date read Oct 03, 2024 | date added Sep 27, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | | | checkbox | position | cover The World of All Souls: A Complete Guide to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and the Book of Life | title The World of All Souls: A Complete Guide to A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and the Book of Life | author Harkness, Deborah * | isbn 0735220743 | isbn13 9780735220744 | asin 0735220743 | num pages 484pp | avg rating 4.26 | num ratings 3,306 | date pub May 08, 2018 | date pub edition May 08, 2018 | Colleen's rating it was amazing | my rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars add to shelves | review The final book in the trilogy, this book wraps up the series in a quite satisfactory way but does leave a few doors open if Harkness wanted to continu The final book in the trilogy, this book wraps up the series in a quite satisfactory way but does leave a few doors open if Harkness wanted to continue the story. I would have given it 4 and a half stars because at times it does tend to go on a bit at times. I love that Harkness is an Elizabethan scholar. As an historian, it is a joy to see the references to real events and persons from the era. I found it especially interested on researching topics like Gerbert and Ashmole 782 that Gerbert was a real pope, Sylvester II, who was rumored to be a sorcerer and that Ashmole 782 is an actual book that is missing. It is a fun and engaging read. ...more | notes Notes are private! | comments 0 | votes 3 | # times read 1 | date started Sep 20, 2024 | date read Sep 24, 2024 | date added Sep 20, 2024 | owned | format Hardcover | actions view (with text) | | | |
