Typhoon
by
107th book of 2022.
I had a collection of Conrad tales but I realised I'm not in the mood to read them at all. Typhoon is one of Conrad's most popular novellas, so it's a good place to settle for the time being. There's not much to say about it, though; in standard Conrad fashion, it's the story of men at sea, shipwrecks, storms, etc. His writing is great, but not nearly as brilliant as in his problematic but startlingly, Heart of Darkness. So, I'd recommend reading that instead if you haven't. And once you've read that, read Lindqvist's 'Exterminate All the Brutes', where he uses that line taken from Conrad's novel and goes on a Sebaldian journey through the Sahara and meditates on the dark history of Europe in Africa.
