it was ok
I know as an English major I am supposed to find this work brilliant and important, but I just don't. I hate it. I hated it the first time I read it, the second time I read it, AND the third time I read it.

I completely agree. I had a fight with my Little Brother over it, because he considered it the greatest piece of English Literature.

Why would you read it three times if you didn't like it the first or second time? Brains much?

It's "Jerk Fa-say!" Did you go see The Watchmen yet?

I'm an English major as well and feel the same way about Heart of Darkness. You don't have to enjoy every single piece of literature to be an expert on it.
message 6: by Ross (new) -rated it 5 stars
As a fellow English major, this is not a book to be enjoyed, or at least not conventionally. In a way it is as dense and interminable as the Congolese jungle!
message 7: by Greg (new) -rated it 2 stars
Leslie, I'm going to try another of Conrad's works to try to understand where the author is coming from.

The ''achievements'' of the european colonialism in Africa are well known...therefore as a soldier of a country that has caused some of the greatest disasters on this planet you won't find any brilliance on this work...perhaps you should try reading it as a free thinking human...
message 9: by Sera (new) -rated it 3 stars
I love when people get mad at one star reviews and then claim you’re not a free thinker. 🤣 the irony is so lost on them. Maybe they should have read better books instead of admiring this one.
