Albert Camus

“The first time that this tribulation appeared in history, it was to strike down the enemies of God. Pharaoh opposed the designs of the Eternal and the plague brought him to his knees. Since the beginning of history, the scourge of God has brought down the proud and the blind beneath His feet. Think on this and fall to your knees.”
― Albert Camus, The Plague

Emma Goldman

“If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution.”
― Emma Goldman

Patrick Hamilton

“Too much thought is bad for the soul, for art, and for crime. It is also a sign of middle age.”
― Patrick Hamilton

Albert Camus

“He would be expressing himself from the depths of long days of meditation and suffering, the image that he wanted to communicate having been long tempered in the fire of waiting and passion. The other person, meanwhile, imagined a conventional emotion, the suffering that is hawked around the marketplace, a mass-produced melancholy.”
― Albert Camus, The Plague

Immanuel Kant

“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”
― Emmanuel Kant

Welcome to 'Reading the 20th Century', a friendly and inclusive group that explores and discusses the literature, history, culture and music of the ye Welcome to 'Reading the 20th Century', a friendly and inclusive group that explores and discusses the literature, history, culture and music of the years between 1900 and 1999. This 100-year period saw extraordinary levels of change, including two global conflicts, new political ideologies, increased life expectancy, the end of empires and much more. The 20th Century witnessed more technological and scientific progress than all the other previous centuries combined, inspiring writers, historians and artists to try to make sense of it all. Each month we explore a decade within the century, or a movement or idea, or a key author, or a theme, by nominating and voting on a work of fiction or non-fiction linked to the monthly theme. Group members regularly arrange buddy reads too - so there is always plenty going on, and lots of discussions to enrich your reading experiences. These buddy reads are primarily 20th Century but not exclusively. Feel free to suggest a book from any era. Although we cover all aspects of the 20th Century, we are a UK-based group and our main emphasis tends towards the UK and Europe. ...more

In the years from 1900 to 1945 the world of literature went through a seismic shift. The idealism of the Belle Époque gave way to Dada, surrealism and many a movement that came to embody the modernist era. Turbulent political times and a series of catastrophic world events gave rise to a generation of novelists and poets striving to make sense out of a changed world order, who combined to produce some of the finest works of fiction ever put to paper. If you love Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, W. Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, Katherine Mansfield, D.H. Lawrence, Marcel Proust, W.H. Auden, Ernest Hemingway, Aldous Huxley, F. Scott Fitzgerald...and the many other exciting authors of that time you'll love this group. ...more
