I’ve seen a lot of similar discrepancies between Amazon and Goodreads over the last few months. Annoying, but oh well. I am usually no fan of short stories, as I tend to see anything under a hundred pages as underdeveloped. However, I had a really good time with this one. The quality of the writing was solid and this was a very unique premise. Chelsea was haphazard, complex, and somehow very intriguing main character, while Damaris was this modern day siren of sorts leading her into a bad situation. The story and ultimate finale were a lot of fun and were something that I didn’t fully expect. As you would imagine, my main critiques focus around certain plot points needing a bit more attention. These include Brendan and his trauma, some more on Chels and both her family and job dynamics, and the evolving friendship with Damaris, which felt a bit rushed. It was all covered, but I think that if this story was maybe a hundred pages, covering all those bases a bit further, it would have gone from good to great. Overall a good reading experience. ...more

And he took some bold moves to reinvent a tired premise, but the risks paid off. Gareth was very unlikable, which was what his character was designed to be. And as we learn more about his shady business dealings and what actually happened with Daniel, you grow from disliking him to full blown hating him. The ending was somewhat satisfying, but felt a bit rushed, as did the overall pacing of the book. So the impact of the culmination of these two old allies suffered a bit from that. On the pacing, the entire story, while still very good, could have benefited from romancing itself a bit. And no, that wasn’t a cheap masturbation joke. If the brakes were applied, and things were allowed to simmer with the reader, it all would have felt more meaningful. Not to say that this needed to be some grandiose 300-page epic tale, but maybe another 20-30 pages of content and further development on things like Evelyn’s outright hate for Gareth, Sophie and Amelia having issues from everything going on at home, some more involvement from Melanie, etc. So, not without a few issues, this was another good read from a talented author. ...more

Here's an oldie...when do mummy's eat breakfast? When they catch you, lol. Ok, but this was an entertaining ride. Lots of action and some decent bloodshed, all mixed up with some good quality lore. The one area that I would have liked to see elaborated on is Andrea's character. She was written well, but overall, I just wanted some more done with her. And the other thing that I really enjoyed here was the length of the book. There was good pacing, a well executed plot, and it didn't overstay it's welcome, even though it could have easily added more content. Another good showing by Derek Heath! ...more

There were a fair amount of typos and formatting issues on the Kindle edition, which was very distracting. So this was a bit of an odd story. I enjoyed it, with some of its twisted content, but I struggled to see beyond that aspect. Jack was a solid lead, but his story felt very abbreviated and the plot shifted away from him and more onto body horror towards the midpoint of the story. And Sissy also had a lot of interesting aspects to her, too, but she also suffered from not being developed properly. So both of our main characters travel through this sordid affair with The Duke and his cronies, fighting for their lives, dabbling in black magic, and fighting complicated relationship dynamics. On paper, this sounds like a lot of fun, and in a lot of ways it was, but I struggled to see what the point was. The characters were not developed enough to have any sort of arcs or ultimate goals, and the plot was a bit convoluted, trying to jam a ton of variables into a very short book. So, as the reader, I was left to ponder anything to anticipate for a satisfactory ending, which was impossible. I feel if Jack was kept as our lead, with the point of view focused on him throughout, giving him some sort of ambition and keeping on his emotional journey here, this would have smoothed out a good deal of the plot. And everything, ranging from the premise and every other characters, also needed a lot more fine-tuning to make things come full circle. The writing was enjoyable, but the execution of the story left a lot to be desired. ...more

Jeremy Ray created a very unique and intriguing apocalyptic situation that distanced itself from anything else that I've read. He managed to cram an incredible amount of detail and depth into 60 short pages. It definitely left me wanting more, but also very satisfied with the content that was given. I also really liked the subtle touch of our lead writing this out like the rough draft of a journal entry. Lines crossed out, words replaced, etc, just made it all feel that much more real. A great way to spend 30 minutes if you're into horror, end of the world type plots, or even creature features. ...more
