**Bill Kupersmith**rated a book it was amazing The Radetzky March (Von Trotta Family, #1) by Joseph Roth | Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars2 of 5 stars3 of 5 stars4 of 5 stars5 of 5 stars |
I so loved Mikos Banffy's They Were Counted that I had to continue my imaginary sojourn in the Habsburg Empire on eve of the Great War. Joseph Roth's The Radetzky March is probably the most famous novel set in that period. Today if you visit Austria, I so loved Mikos Banffy's They Were Counted that I had to continue my imaginary sojourn in the Habsburg Empire on eve of the Great War. Joseph Roth's The Radetzky March is probably the most famous novel set in that period. Today if you visit Austria, you will be shown the empty palaces and told that Franz Josef still symbolizes the good old days, recalling when Vienna was the powerhouse of central Europe and the Empire extended into the Ukraine and Bosnia. Actually I found this ironically titled novel a little disappointing; we felt more the stultifying boredom of bureaucratic officialdom and of regimental duty in remote garrison towns than experiencing the grandeur of a great empire, but that was surely the intent of the original author. He perhaps was too close to the lost days to feel nostalgia and Hitler represented current reality. Still a classic though, it deserves its five stars and the Emperor exemplifies his reputation for goodness. ...more

After learning of terrible cases of sexual abuse of young athletes, such as the Michigan State gymnasts, we can scarcely find anything implausible in fictional accounts of similar crimes. This tale of Coach McQueen's treatment of swimmers and hockey After learning of terrible cases of sexual abuse of young athletes, such as the Michigan State gymnasts, we can scarcely find anything implausible in fictional accounts of similar crimes. This tale of Coach McQueen's treatment of swimmers and hockey players at a posh Dublin girls' school is totally believable, especially as a coach is often the first important adult person who is not a parent to be a major influence on a teenager. Unfortunately, too likely as well is the response of the nuns who run the school and blame the whistleblower who narrates this novel. Lou is the teenaged daughter of an alcoholic single mother, whose BF committed suicide after being raped and impregnated by her coach. Having myself written a novel with a main character who goes undercover to expose sexual predation, I felt thoroughly involved in the plot. But I found the time frame too big and the cast of characters too numerous to maintain my focus. It is only years later that Lou's story is resolved. But the irony of an Olympic-sized swimming facility being named in honour of a sex criminal is all too likely. ...more

“I had no one to help me, but the T. S. Eliot helped me.
So when people say that poetry is a luxury, or an option, or for the educated middle classes, or that it shouldn’t be read at school because it is irrelevant, or any of the strange stupid things that are said about poetry and its place in our lives, I suspect that the people doing the saying have had things pretty easy. A tough life needs a tough language – and that is what poetry is. That is what literature offers – a language powerful enough to say how it is.
It isn’t a hiding place. It is a finding place.”
― Jeanette Winterson, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?
“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”
― Carl Gustav Jung
“The distance is commonly very great between actual performances and speculative possibility. It is natural to suppose, that as much as has been done to-day may be done to-morrow; but on the morrow some difficulty emerges or some external impediment obstructs. Indolence, interruption, business, and pleasure; all take their turns of retardation; and every long work is lengthened by a thousand causes that can, and ten thousand that cannot, be recounted. Perhaps no extensive and multifarious performance was ever effected within the term originally fixed in the undertaker's mind. He that runs against Time, has an antagonist not subject to casualties.
From Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Poets series, published in 3 volumes between 1779 and 1781, on Alexander Pope”
― Samuel Johnson, Lives of the Poets, Vol. 1
“But there certainly are not so many men of large fortune in the world as there are pretty women to deserve them.”
― Jane Austen, Mansfield Park
“No one needs a relationship. What you need is the basic cop-on to figure that out, in the face of all the media bullshit screaming that you're nothing on your own and you're a dangerous freak if you disagree. The truth is, if you don't exist without someone else, you don't exist at all. And that doesn't just go for romance. I love my ma, I love my friends, I love the bones of them. If any of them wanted me to donate a kidney or crack a few heads, I'd do it, no questions asked. And if they all waved good-bye and walked out of my life tomorrow, I'd still be the same person I am today.”
― Tana French, The Trespasser

I think both books are works of genius, but flawed in many respects. I'm not sure what there is to discuss, in a way, but would like to know if fans of either or both books have found anything that reminds them of them, and whether they'd recommend them or not. I also wouldn't mind seeing how people's favourite parts of the books compare. ...more
