“Numbers and maps tell horror stories, but the stories of deepest horror are perhaps those for which there are no numbers, no maps, no possible accountability, no words ever written or spoken.”
― Valeria Luiselli, Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions
“But I attach myself only to names and faces; and hoard them like amulets against disaster. I choose out across the hall some unknown face and can hardly drink my tea when she whose name I do not know sits opposite. I choke. I am rocked from side to side by the violence of my emotion. I imagine these nameless, these immaculate people, watching me from behind bushes. I leap high to excite their admiration. At night, in bed, I excite their complete wonder. I often die pierced with arrows to win their tears. If they should say, or I should see from a label in their boxes, that they were in Scarborough last holidays, the whole town runs gold, the whole pavement is illuminated. Therefore, I hate my looking-glasses which show me my real face. Alone, I often fall down into nothingness.”
― Virginia Woolf, The Waves
“Life offers up these moments of joy despite everything,”
― Sally Rooney, Normal People
“Allen Ginsberg to Peter Orlovsky— 1958
Tho I long for the actual sunlight contact between us I miss you like a home. Shine back honey & think of me.”
― Allen Ginsberg
“It was culture as class performance, literature fetishised for its ability to take educated people on false emotional journeys, so that they might afterwards feel superior to the uneducated people whose emotional journeys they liked to read about.”
― Sally Rooney, Normal People

To read the Metamorphoses of Ovid, in any of the many translations (or the original), and at whatever speed it takes, with three goals in mind: 1. To To read the Metamorphoses of Ovid, in any of the many translations (or the original), and at whatever speed it takes, with three goals in mind: 1. To discuss the Metamorphoses as both the repository of ancient myths and a document of the political world of its own time (c. 8 CE); 2. To enjoy some of the many different translations and adaptations (including those in other languages) from post-classical times to the present; 3. To explore the influence of the Metamorphoses on poets, artists, and composers from the renaissance onwards. The Metamorphoses consists of 15 books. We shall aim to spend up to a month on each; depending upon the amount of response, the moderators will suggest when it is time to move on. Although some of us have an academic interest, our principal motive is enjoyment and curiosity. Any kind of response is welcomed; our hope is that the readings will trigger as wide a range of discussion in the coming months as the original stories have spawned over the centuries. ...more
