As a kid, if I hated a book, I would rewrite the ending or offending scene to my liking. (I am such a dork, I know.) Then I realized that I could write original books of my own. Mind = blown!
Toni Morison has a great quote that explains on this:

While reading YES, DADDY, I kept thinking about another book I read, MY DARK VANESSA. Both books are written for the #MeToo age and feature victims of abuse as the leads who don't always behave in the ways that society expects of its "model victims." Reading through some of the criticisms for this book actually made me think about MDV a lot, because after experiencing something like these characters did, I imagine all you really want to do is survive and sometimes survival means putting distance between yourself and your trauma by any means necessary, even if it means sacrificing others, pushing people away, or becoming an unreliable narrator in your own narration so you can make your own story more palatable to yourself. The less you know about this book going in, the better, but the basic summary is this: Jonah is a young gay man with an evangelical background who has been estranged from his parents for years. He's a waiter, a struggling playwright, and, yes, a little shallow, but mostly because he has big dreams and he's young and he's operating by a playbook that's much bigger than anything he could possibly come up with. When he meets Richard, an older man and a successful playwright in his own right, sparks fly and Jonah finds all of his problems are neatly solved for the first time in his life.Only...Things aren't as neat as they seem. Which Jonah finds out firsthand as the book swan dives into a steeply neo-Gothic setting that is reminiscent of Daphne DuMaurier, only so much more messed up. In the reclusive Hamptons, strange things happen at night, and the waitstaff are oddly subdued and cagey. And suddenly, lines that once seemed starkly defined suddenly become horribly, incontrovertibly blurred-- until they're not even there at all anymore, because there's nothing left to cross. And maybe not even in the way you're thinking, either, as this is a book that explores ethics, morality, and cancel culture in a really bold and thorough way, picking apart how we dictate who gets to suffer and how, and what the consequences are for those who exploit their power to predate on the weak. This was just... so good. I can't believe it's a debut (which, again, makes me think of MY DARK VANESSA, because that book was also a debut that just blew everything out of the water). I do agree with others in that the last act isn't quite as riveting as the first 2/3 of the book, but I get why the author made some of the narrative choices that he did, and I think the cool down period is a necessary one for a narrative of this caliber. Anyone who likes dark beach reads, glitzy thrillers, thoughtful criticisms of society, or just a really good story, will enjoy this book a lot.I can't wait to see what this author writes next. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy! ...more

Set in Mexico, in a rural silver mining town, this is the story about the Literally a perfect book. This was everything I want out of a gothic horror-- creative creepy elements, a bit of a toxic romance, and a heroine who endures despite the terrors. Set in Mexico, in a rural silver mining town, this is the story about the wealthy socialite, Noemi, who goes to fetch her newly-wed cousin when her father receives a disturbing telegram suggesting she isn't in her right mind. As soon as Noemi gets there, to "the High Place," things are immediately off. They claim her cousin has tuberculosis when she appears to be hallucinating, the family is clearly closing ranks and hiding something, and the townsfolk whisper of a deadly wedding and mass graves. The horror elements in this book were perfectly integrated into the plot, in a way that made me extremely uncomfortable but also had me taking the time to think, "What does this mean?" I loved the use of rot and corruption as an allegory for the colonialist patriarchy and how it consumes women and minorities (and especially minority women) in its quest to further its own selfish, parasitic gains. I don't want to say anything else because if you haven't read this book, you NEED to go in cold. Someone with Hollywood connections also needs to phone up Guillermo Del Toro and have him make this a movie, because this is a gothic classic right up there with Frankenstein and Crimson Peak. Holy shit, I loved it.5 stars ...more

And if you're seeing this and thinking to yourself, "That's a weird combination," well, yeah. It's a weird book. Told in dual timeline, half of the book is about the FMC's middle school journey to summer camp with her two mean best friends that ends up in a blood bath from which she is the only survivor. As an adult, Sabrina-- now Sadie-- is locked into an emotionally abusive relationship, where working out and lifting weights is her only solace. When her boyfriend suggests a couples' trip to the woods, Sadie is horrified. Is this trip going to be what finally breaks her?I love a good unreliable narrator and as a device, it's employed particularly well here. Even though we know the end game of Sadie's past, there are so many unanswered questions: is she mad or did she really see something otherworldly and horrifying? Did she kill her friends or did someone-- or something-- else? Her emotional breakdown and trauma were portrayed with a lot of nuance and sensitivity, and were sometimes harder to read than the overt trauma and gore. This is definitely one of those books that leaves you feeling, like, "Good for her."I read and loved Schlote-Bonne's YA debut but it went to such dark places that I honestly found it to be almost more terrifying than my poor little wuss-brain could handle. I felt the same way about her adult debut: still just as terrifying, still just as raw. As an author, she's an A+ tour guide and I'll keep going on her journeys, but I'm not sure I'm up for a repeat trip to the same destination. Still, if you're looking for something that will GENUINELY terrify you? Read this book. With the lights on.4 stars ...more

| In U.S. culture (and other cultures as well, I assume) there's this almost fetishistic view of meat. It's tied into masculinity, as if by eating meat you prove somehow either your virility, or your complete dominion over the so-called lesser beings that inhabit this world. People lob around the insult "soy-boy," as if eating soy over dairy somehow makes someone less of a man, because real men eat meat. Bazterrica runs with this premise in her book, where the government has converted the way they process meat to accommodate for human flesh, and shows, by replacing with animals with humans, how utterly inhumane the meat industry is, and how we, as a society, dissociate ourselves from the process by which an animal becomes food. We even see that removal begin in the language itself: pigs become pork, baby cows become veal, sheep become mutton, etc.Marcos, our narrator, is a depressed man who works in such a facility. His father is dying with dementia and his wife has left him following the death of their baby. He hates the meat industry and he hates that they don't call it what it is, tiptoeing around semantics by referring to human meat as "special meat" or as "head" when they're alive. Infractions can result in death, with those who commit the crimes ending up as meat, as well. He still remembers a time when real animals were slaughtered, and he knows that some people are unable to come to terms with this. His father is one of those people, and we are led to believe that this is one of the reasons for his cognitive decline. When Marcos is gifted a premium-grade human woman as a gift by his employer, she's the last thing he wants, but he ends up raising her as a pet and then as something more, as the line between consumer and consumed becomes terrifyingly thin. This book wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be-- I think because I've had to participate in a biology lab and have had to be wrist-deep in organs for science. People were a little cagey on the details, so if you're worried about whether this book will be too much for you, I will say that it goes into pretty great detail on the slaughtering process. There's an entire chapter about how humans are stunned, killed, and packaged. There's a part about human experimentation, run by a pretty sadistic doctor that the hero compares to Menegle (who was a Nazi scientist, in case you didn't know). There's animal cruelty, where a group of teens beat a bunch of puppies to death. And then there's a whole bunch of minor cruelties mentioned in asides. Pregnant "head" get their arms and legs cut off so they can't damage their babies. Rock stars and celebrities can sell themselves into a hunt, where gun nuts can hunt them and then eat them. One of these freaks captures and kills a famous rock star and brags about how eating his dick will make him virile. There are brothels that let you fuck and then kill women, and one of these same freaks refers to the process of raping the fourteen-year-old he eats as "tenderizing," jokingly. The ending is disturbing and infuriating because I feel like it implies that a lot of our moral outrage is hypocritical and results in non-action, or is a mask for our own sublimated desires and cognitive dissonance. Which is a sad and depressing thought. I guess the point of dystopians is to make people uncomfortable and force people to confront incredibly jarring aspects of society, but this message is particularly chilling. 3 stars ...more | |

It's just as epic in scope and the author, Afia Atakora, does a really good job showing people at their best and at their worst in the microcosm of plantation life. I was so impressed by the depth and complexity of all the characters, especially the two main characters, Rue and May Belle, who are the healing women on the plantation and sometimes do hideously cruel things when their own selfishness and desperation to survive overrides their mission to do no harm. The novel is told in pieces. The wartime parts are narrated by May Belle, a respected woman on the plantation who delivers the babies and does all the healing. Her position is thrown into flux, though, as her daughter slowly comes of age and with her, the daughter of the plantation, Varina. Brought up in relative shelter from the crueler machinations of the plantation, Rue has grown up blind to what white people are capable of. That blind eye has some glaring repercussions for Rue and her mother. The second piece of the novel is narrated after the war. Rue has now taken over her mother's duties, but she lacks her mother's warmth and her people regard her with suspicion and fear, especially when a mysterious plague starts to afflict the children, causing them to sicken and die. Rue's foothold of power and respect is then thrown into question when a preacher named Abel comes and his biblical variety of salvation proves more imminently consumable and palatable than her own.I loved this book so much. In addition to the Steinbeck comparison for its simple but elegant brutality of the written word, I would say that this book also reminded me a lot of Octavia Butler's KINDRED. It's one of the more nuanced books of the Civil War-era South I have ever read. There are some scenes towards the end that are very hard to read, including torture and rape, but it's never too graphic, isn't lingered on, and is crucial to the story. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy!4.5 stars ...more

“It starts so young, and I'm angry about that. The garbage we're taught. About love, about what's "romantic." Look at so many of the so-called romantic figures in books and movies. Do we ever stop and think how many of them would cause serious and drastic unhappiness after The End? Why are sick and dangerous personality types so often shown a passionate and tragic and something to be longed for when those are the very ones you should run for your life from? Think about it. Heathcliff. Romeo. Don Juan. Jay Gatsby. Rochester. Mr. Darcy. From the rigid control freak in The Sound of Music to all the bad boys some woman goes running to the airport to catch in the last minute of every romantic comedy. She should let him leave.
