“I’m really tired of people saying what is lost in translation. Look at what you gain. You gain three universes worth of books. It’s worth it to lose something in translation, if you can get a hundred more texts that are going to change your life.”
― Arshia Sattar
“Art demands what, to women, current civilisation won't give. There is for a Dostoyevsky writing against time on the corner of a crowded kitchen table a greater possibility of detachment than for a woman artist no matter how placed. Neither motherhood nor the more continuously exacting and indefinitely expansive responsibilities of even the simplest housekeeping can so effectively hamper her as the human demand, besieging her wherever she is, for an inclusive awareness, from which men, for good or ill, are exempt.”
― Dorothy M. Richardson
“Those who can make people believe absurdities, can make people commit atrocities.”
― Voltaire
“Though we come and go, and pass into the shadows, where we leave behind us stories told — on paper, on the wings of butterflies, on the wind, on the hearts of others — there we are remembered, there we work magic and great change — passing on the fire like a torch — forever and forever. Till the sky falls, and all things are flawless and need no words at all.”
― Tanith Lee
“Women in the online gaming community have been harassed, threatened, and driven out. Anita Sarkeesian, a feminist media critic who documented such incidents, received support for her work, but also, in the words of a journalist, 'another wave of really aggressive, you know, violent personal threats, her accounts attempted to be hacked. And one man in Ontario took the step of making an online video game where you could punch Anita's image on the screen. And if you punched it multiple times, bruises and cuts would appear on her image.' The difference between these online gamers and the Taliban men who, last October, tried to murder fourteen-year-old Malala Yousafzai for speaking out about the right of Pakistani women to education is one of degree. Both are trying to silence and punish women for claiming voice, power, and the right to participate. Welcome to Manistan.”
― Rebecca Solnit, Men Explain Things to Me

Through a glass darkly, to brave new worlds and beyond we go." We seek to explore and do critical reading from any genre on challenging literature, both new and established, that links into themes of exploring ideas relating to various aspects of culture, society and technology, as well as what is loosely called 'literary fiction'; and in addition, non-English translated literature from around the world. We also discuss classics as well as avant-garde literature from all eras inasfar as they have challenged the world around them. Wherever necessary to give more background knowledge, discussion of non-fiction books are welcome. The idea is to provide not only a forum for discussion, but a database of book-ish information for the eclectic reader. Our threads all remain open indefinitely, so you can browse through and read and/or contribute at your own leisure. ...more

China's work is about exploring ideas in new ways, and that is what we love about him! ...more

Rules Members are free to create author threads by surname if they do not currently exist—but be sure to search the group first to see if a thread is already present before starting a new one! When creating new author threads, please be sure to link author (you'll see this just under the subject field) so that it shows up on the main Goodreads page for that author. This will allow others who are not members to still have access to this group's discussion threads across the entire site. We ask that members do not create other threads at this time; we will create them in the "meta" section as the need for them arises—e.g., there will be a threads for each month, to have a hand place where people can "advertise" their upcoming group reads in case others haven't seen them formed in the specific author threads. Regarding the sharing of books: what members do in private is their own business, but as a group, we cannot condone piracy, so any public posts regarding indiscriminate e-book sharing will be deleted by the moderators. No self-promotion by authors. And, of course: be courteous to everyone, please. Happy reading! ...more
