Legendary medieval outlaws include Eustace and Monk, Hereward the Wake, and Gamelyn, to name just a few. Gamelyn, unlike the other two, is almost certainly a fictional character through and through. After his father dies, Gamelyn and his inheritance are pinned under the thumb of his eldest brother. When Gamelyn rebels, he must flee to the woods, while his brother becomes the sheriff. For the full story on Gamelyn, and how his legend relates to Robin Hood's, you can check out the blog article at the link below.

New Historical Humour Book in the Works

It's been a busy summer, editing my new upcoming book Knights of the Roundish Table.

Where The Scarlet Forest: A Tale of Robin Hood is a historical novel, and Questionable Quizzes is humour, Knights of the Roundish Table will blend both genres.

Knights of the Roundish Table takes inspiration from Arthurian literature throughout the medieval period, and makes history hilarious. The Green Knight, tRead more of this blog post »

I think it would be interesting to hear the thoughts of a historian specializing in China, if one happens to write a review. Chinese history was brought in much more than western history throughout the book (most of the "facts" included on western history were just bizarre). I didn't take enough Chinese history to speak authoritatively, but expect a more Chinese-focused scholar would have a fairly different interpretation of several of the events. If you do decide to read this book, keeping your critical thinking cap on is a good way to go about it. : ) Happy reading. ...more"

He does not try to be objective, but states his biases outright, which prompt doubts about his interpretations.I can’t speak to the book’s accuracy on Mongolian or Chinese history, as I largely studied western history. It was disconcerting, though, that most of the information the book presented on European and West Asian history was inaccurate and sometimes contradictory. (Possibly the most baffling was the claim that Chaucer’s fourteenth-century The Canterbury Tales was the first book written in English, when so many well-known books are extant from previous centuries, including The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle completed in the twelfth century, and Beowulf composed in the eighth or so.) It was disheartening to see misinformation used to argue that some cultures were superior to or more “advanced” than others, as though it were a competition, rather than simply presenting Mongolian history for readers to appreciate and learn more about. ...more
