“Its all about the journey”

Its all about the journey, isn't it? And our journey through Kenya, Africa was amazing and we have Bijal Kana of Goway Travel to thank for it. From the start when we first discussed a true Safari adventure, Bijal was being helpful. Her suggestions were helpful in where to go and how we could save a few dollars when possible. Never trying to be cheap but simply, cost conscious. This was the beginning of what will continue as a forever working relationship in travel. Bijal gained our confidence and trust. And that is a rare commodity these days. Then too there was the staff from Goway and Sense of Africa like Ruth, Wilson and Francis who allowed us to see the non tourist side of Nairobi and became fast friends. The wonderful selections made by Bijal as to where we would stay and all the Serena locations were marvelous. And at the last minute, when a bridge got washed out and we could not get to the last lodge camp, Bijal responded to our whatsapp call immediately and we were placed in the Sorova lodge. True not the same, but in the middle of a game area, who complains? It was great and we had so much fun. The tour selection took us through parks, reserves and conservancy locales. We saw the big 5 and much more. Lions fighting, Hyenas making a chase and ultimate dinner selection, A leopard resting on tree branches, A cheetah stalking and then at rest. Hyena pups and Honbeast babes being birthed. Hippopotamus in the water, Zebra grazing, Elephants crossing rivers en mass. You'd think we hit the National Geographic channel. Great job Bijal. Good deal Goway.

“Amazing experience in Dubai and Maldives”

I truly don’t have the words to fully describe my recent trip to Dubai and the Maldives—“amazing” simply doesn’t do it justice. I have traveled many times before, but this trip will stay with me in a special way, largely because of how wonderfully it was organized by Emma Woodward at Goway Travel. From departing Toronto Pearson Airport to arriving in Dubai, continuing on to the Maldives, and returning home, everything went perfectly—we did not experience a single hiccup. I entrusted Emma with organizing our entire itinerary, including where to go, what to see in Dubai, and selecting the perfect resort in the Maldives based on our preferences. Throughout the trip, I truly felt like royalty. We were warmly welcomed at each destination, seamlessly transferred to our accommodations, and taken care of every step of the way. In Dubai, she arranged an incredible guided tour of the city, allowing us to see all the must-visit highlights, as well as an unforgettable desert experience that included amazing cultural experience including amazing local food, cultural entertainment and activities such as dune ride, sunset at the dessert, sandboarding, camel ride etc. The Maldives was a breathtaking experience in itself—from the scenic seaplane transfer to the resort to the peaceful, relaxing atmosphere that provided the perfect balance after our busy days in Dubai. Thank you very much to Emma for creating such a memorable experience for us. This trip was a perfect gift from my husband for my 60th birthday and my retirement. I will cherish these memories and will gladly recommend Goway Travel to all of my friends. Warm regards, Margarita and Zoran Filinov

“wanted to extend my sincere thanks for…”

wanted to extend my sincere thanks for the truly extraordinary experience you created for us on our Africa trip. From start to finish, everything felt seamless, allowing us to relax and fully immerse ourselves in each destination. Throughout the journey, we consistently felt safe, supported, and incredibly well cared for something we deeply appreciated. One of the most unforgettable highlights was our gorilla trekking experience. Spending time observing the gorilla family was nothing short of magical and deeply moving. We are also so grateful for our guide, Alexis. He added the adventure of visiting the Dian Fossey Campus. That experience added such depth and meaning to our time in Rwanda and made an already once-in-a-lifetime encounter even more special. In Kenya, our guide Alex was absolutely exceptional. His knowledge, patience, and enthusiasm truly elevated our safari experience. He went above and beyond — offering additional experiences, sharing fascinating insights, and making tremendous efforts to help us see every animal on our bucket list. His passion for wildlife and culture was contagious, and we learned so much because of him. We returned home inspired, filled with incredible memories, and with a strong desire to share our experience with family and friends. We are already encouraging others to embark on what is truly a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Thank you again for your care, expertise, and attention to every detail. The trip exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly grateful.

“Ghana is a Go! Loved everything”

I am writing to let you know that my clients returned from their journey and gave glowing reports about the accommodations, tours, and staff. They particularly liked Vivian, their tour guide. Not only was she thoroughly knowledgeable and astute, she was a genuinely great human being, and between her and their excellent driver, made their first time visit one of their best trips.

“A wonderful experience. ”

This was my first time working with GoWay. We had a group go to South Africa. Taha put together a fabulous trip for us. The whole experience from start to finish was fantastic. The activities Taha put together as well as everyone we worked with in South Africa was top notch. I'm already planning another trip with Taha.

Travel Information about Botswana

Get to know Botswana before you go.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Botswana depends on what kind of experience you're after, but you really can’t go wrong. Each season offers something unique.

The dry season (May to October) is the most popular time for safaris, thanks to cooler weather and prime opportunities for wildlife viewing. With water sources shrinking, animals gather around rivers and waterholes, making them easier to spot, especially in places like Chobe and Moremi. This is also the best time for exploring the Okavango Delta by mokoro, as seasonal floods fill the channels.

The wet season (November to April) brings lush greenery, dramatic skies, and far fewer tourists. While wildlife is more dispersed, the scenery is spectacular, making this period an ideal time for both birdwatchers (migratory species arrive in full colour) and photographers. It’s also the time to witness one of Botswana’s lesser-known wonders—the thousands of zebras migrating across the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Whether you prefer dramatic game drives in the dry season or serene landscapes and quiet camps in the green season, Botswana delivers. Each visit reveals a different side of the wilderness.

Destination Specialist Kim Rollings recommends visiting from May to September: “This is considered the prime time for game viewing, particularly in the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. Animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense.”

To determine the season that’s right for you, check out our guide to the Best Time to Visit.

Culture & Traditions

Located in the heart of southern Africa, Botswana offers more than just safaris. It’s a destination rich in culture, flavours, and traditions. The warmth of the Tswana people makes you feel at home the moment you arrive. Guests are welcomed like family because of the spirit of generosity that runs deep through Botswana's culture. Hospitality here isn’t just a gesture. It’s a way of life.

At the centre of Tswana tradition is storytelling, often passed down around the fire under star-filled skies. Elders share folk tales and life lessons, keeping ancestral wisdom alive. These stories are paired beautifully with Botswana’s rich craft traditions. Items like woven baskets, beadwork, and pottery are made with skill and pride.

Food & Drink

Botswana’s cuisine tells the story of its land and people, weaving together heritage, community, and flavour.

From homestead-raised meats to seasonal melons believed by some to have originated here, meals are rooted in local tradition while welcoming modern interpretations. Food in Botswana is not simply sustenance but a reflection of cultural rhythm and hospitality.

The national dish, Seswaa, captures this essence: slow-cooked beef, shredded and simmered with onions, served over pap, a maize porridge that anchors many meals. Morogo, a medley of leafy greens such as pumpkin leaves or wild spinach, is a frequent accompaniment, while bogobe, a sorghum or maize porridge, is a breakfast staple. Adventurous eaters may try mopane worms, rich in protein and often fried or stewed, while game meats like venison, ostrich, and crocodile highlight the country’s abundant wildlife. For a sweeter bite, magwenya—deep-fried dough balls known as fat cakes—are popular in towns and villages alike.

Dining etiquette in Botswana blends formality with warmth. Meals at local homes honour guests with seats of prominence, and washing hands before eating is customary whether using cutlery or hands. In rural settings, sharing food in this traditional way deepens the sense of connection. Weddings are open community events, embodying the spirit of togetherness that characterises Botswana life.

When it comes to drinks, sorghum beer remains integral at gatherings, brewed both at home and commercially as Chibuku. Alcohol is available in bars, restaurants, and safari camps, though public drunkenness is discouraged. Travellers seeking non-alcoholic options will enjoy African Stoney ginger beer.

Whether dining at a bustling Maun café, tasting Seswaa in sandwich form, or enjoying inclusive meals at a safari lodge, Botswana’s food offers a sensory journey into the country’s traditions and contemporary spirit.

Insider Travel Tips

The local currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities and lodges, but it's wise to carry some cash for tips or purchases in rural areas.

English is the official language and used in business and tourism. Setswana (Tswana) is the national language, commonly spoken by locals.

Most visitors enjoy visa-free access for up to 90 days. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

In terms of health precautions, some regions in Botswana carry a malaria risk. Consult your healthcare provider about preventive medication before departure.

Travel between safari destinations often involves light aircraft transfers, offering scenic views and quick access to remote camps. Luggage limits on these flights (usually 15 to 20 kilograms, soft bags only) are strictly enforced, so pack lightly. “In addition to your main softshell bag, it is always handy to have a small handheld bag,” Destination Specialist Kim Rollings advises. “You can keep it with you in the front of the safari vehicle or take it on hikes or walks so you’ll have your most important items nearby.”

What do the experts say?

Some travellers believe that Botswana is the most expensive destination in Africa. But there are many ways to travel in Botswana to lower the price point. You just have to know the right camps and lodges

The country is one of the only countries in Southern Africa that offers traditional road safaris, walking safaris, water (motorboat, canoe, and traditional mokoro) safaris

May - September is considered the prime time for game viewing, particularly in the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. Animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources, and the vegetation is less dense
