What's New in 2024 - Gower Fresh Christmas Trees (original) (raw)

What a great Christmas we had at Gower Fresh in 2023! The season brought phenomenal success, with hundreds of thousands of trees finding new homes. Our Winter Wonderland and Santa’s Grotto were bustling with the joyous laughter of thousands of visitors. We couldn’t be happier with the overwhelming response—lots of happy customers, glowing reviews, and heartwarming feedback. A big thank you goes out to our Santas and elves, and all the staff who worked tirelessly to make your Christmas experience better. It’s moments like these that drive us to do what we do—bringing happiness to children and families, and spreading the magic and cheer of Christmas.

The Reindeer

The new year started with a long overdue break for all of us but we are now back at it. We’re currently enjoying the crisp, frosty mornings at the farm. We’re optimistic that 2024’s weather will be on our side. The reindeer are particularly fond of this season; it’s tailor-made for them as they are designed for this weather.

Our bull, Ringo, has finally lost his antlers together with his mojo from mating and is now a rather lowly male in the herd than the king of the jungle he was just a month ago. Witnessing nature’s spectacle, akin to a David Attenborough documentary, is a constant reminder of the wonders we’re privileged to experience here—reindeer, wildlife, and all.

Ringo’s tireless efforts and relentless persistence with the females promise a flurry of baby reindeer come May—an exciting time for the farm as always, tempered with a touch of anxiety. Reindeer, especially, embody a maternal spirit during calving season like no other animals we’ve had on the farm. While they typically manage on their own, we’ve stepped in to assist a few during those crucial first hours, including the occasional c-section for larger or challenging births. Or, if they are orphaned like the famous Buddy, who will be always missed and who brought joy to so many. Years ago we’d have 600 ewes to lamb and 200 cattle to feed so a far cry from then but it’s still a lot of work and a lot of challenges and struggles like it is for most farmers.

Flower Fields

Recently, we planted the final batch of tulips, expanding our vibrant display to 100,000 bulbs this year. We are excited for you to see a plethora of colours and varieties blooming in March or April, with a tulip flower arch and perhaps a windmill—picture it, a touch of Holland in Wales.

Besides the tulips we now plant a variety of many other flowers. Last year’s lavender field was a visual delight, a picture of a sea of purple. Now, we’re crafting an array of lavender-infused products—oils, bath bombs, dried bunches, and soap. This year, more plants join the mix, promising an even grander display. Our attempt at delphiniums last year faced setbacks, our lack of experience and difficult growing year presented some challenges. But this year they are up already, so fingers crossed it will be another dazzling display of flowers. Petals from these flowers are dried and become exquisite wedding confetti.

Rhossili Sunflowers

As we pointed out the farm is poised for a floral spectacle this year, including our sunflower fields at Rhossili where we grow our sunflowers overlooking the iconic Rhossili Bay. With meticulously planned planting, expect an array of sunflower hues, pick-your-own flower strips, a Gruffalo trail, sunflower arches, sunflower swings, the pop café and also a lavender patch this year. Rhossili Sunflowers 2024 promises to surpass all previous years. We can’t wait for your see it.

The Rhossili is also famous for its ponies, adding to the scenic beauty. Check the Sunflowers website and Facebook Page (#rhossilisunflowers) for updates and captivating photos and videos of this stunning part of Gower. The sunflowers bloom in mid-July, coinciding with the start of the summer holidays.

Easter trail 2024

Before we go that far in the year, before the summer and the sunflowers, our Easter Trail beckons—one of our most popular and enjoyable events marking the transition from winter to spring. The Easter trail winds through the farm, looking for all the clues and Easter eggs. At the halfway point, an entertainment tent will host a bubble circus this year. We are having Roly Poly back entertaining our visitors at the barn, and of course lots of food and drinks at the café. And, of course, not forgetting, you can meet and feed the reindeer.

Pumkin PYO Festival

Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for our Pumpkin Pick-Your-Own Festival later in the year. With over 30 new pumpkin varieties, including pink pumpkins, it promises to be lots of fun. Sadly the weather was against us last year. We had lottos visitors but we know how much better it could’ve been providing we have good weather. So we are planing to have the pumpkins at drier fields this year. We hope that will make for a drier and more enjoyable pumpkin-picking experience, but still have the muddy puddles for the little ones.

Winter Wonderland and Santa's Grotto

Our Christmas experience continues to grow and get better. The Winter Wonderland, a favourite this past year, especially the grinch and the singing elf. We had 5 Santas and lots of elf’s helping our visitors. Tickets flew off the shelves, almost as soon as we launched as early as end of August. It was mind blowing, reinforcing our reputation as one of the UK’s premier indoor Winter Wonderlands—some say even rivalling Lapland.

Now, we’re busy redesigning the Winter Wonderland, with the exciting addition of an outdoor light trail. Our investment in lights and meticulous design aims to create a magical experience. Hopefully it will be all ready by the autumn.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees were in high demand, especially the Fraser Fir and pot-grown varieties. Winning the runner-up title for the best tree grower in the UK was a proud moment, culminating in supplying a tree for inside No. 10 Downing Street and a smaller one to the prime minister, Rishi Sunak.

This is a quick update on what to expect from us in 2024. As always we are committed to bring you the best experience possible. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back soon. As we plan for the upcoming events, including the eagerly awaited Pumpkin Festival and the enchanting Christmas experience, we’re filled with anticipation for the wonderful moments that lie ahead on Gower Fresh Christmas Tree Farm.
