Arena do Morro Celebrates Ten-year Anniversary – Herzog & de Meuron (original) (raw)

MÃE LUIZA, BRAZIL – The Arena do Morro in Mãe Luiza, Brazil, recently marked its 10th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, Pierre and associate Tomislav Dushanov joined in a series of events on site.

Since its inauguration in 2014, the gymnasium has profoundly transformed the underprivileged neighborhood. Offering communal facilities, educational opportunities, and sports amenities, Arena do Morro has become a vital hub for the community.

The building is simple and open, reflecting and responding to locally available materials and construction methods. The gymnasium is a permeable, fully naturally conditioned building.

The Arena do Morro is the first project that was realised within the wider urban proposal ‘A Vision for Mãe Luiza’, which we developed together with the Ameropa Foundation and the Centro Sócio Pastoral Nossa Senhora de Conceição in 2009.
