Respected as the first female fast jet pilot, Dr Jo Salter MBE is best known for flying the Panavia Tornado during her services in the Royal Air Force. Having joined the RAF at the age of 18, she has gained many years of valuable knowledge and experience whilst working in a variety of high-pressure situations. Having joined the Royal Air Force at age 18, Jo began her studies at the Royal Military College of Science and shortly after secured the role of Engineering Officer. Taking a new direction in her career once it was announced that women could be allowed to pilot jet aircraft, she developed a strong passion for performing to the peak of her abilities. In 1992, Jo earned her wings to fly and by the end of the year, she had completed her fast jet training. After securing the profound position of Flight Lieutenant of the 617 Squadron, she claimed the title of the first female fast jet pilot. Admired throughout the industry, she gained the opportunity to lead an all-male squadron and has continued to showcase that women are as capable as men in all aspects of life.
A leading authority in her field, Jo has become a Trustee of The Royal Air Force Club and an Ambassador of the Global Angels charity. In recognition of her remarkable career achievements, Jo has been named one of the 50 Most Inspiring Women in the World by Harpers & Queen. A true representation of high performance, she was personally invited by Tom Cruise to attend the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick due to her respected reputation in the aviation industry. Having most recently received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Bournemouth University, Jo does not plan on taking a step back from her admirable career anytime soon.
