Shailene Woodley Says She Wouldn’t Be Who She Is Today Without Kate Winslet (original) (raw)

Shailene Woodley took a moment to praise her Divergent co-star Kate Winslet and the impact the Oscar-winning actress has had on her life.

The Three Women star stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday to promote her current Starz show. During the conversation, Woodley reflected on how she’s been “blessed” throughout her life to have people “show up in a really, really, truthful, pure way,” — and that includes Winslet.

The actress appeared alongside each other in Divergent and its sequel Insurgent, in which Woodley portrayed Tris and Winslet took on the role of Jeanine. When the talk show host asked if the Lee star had served as a “sounding board” for her, Woodley noted it went even beyond that.

“She’s so — not to overuse the word real — but she’s just real,” the _Big Little Lies _star said. “She is who she is, and she’s not afraid to be who she is, and she’s done the hard work.”

Drew Barrymore then brought up that she read a quote from Winslet recently about how she wishes she would’ve stood up for herself more after Titanic, as men often commented on her body shape and size. While The Regime actress may not have spoken up for herself at the time, Woodley pointed out that she did do it for her.

“We worked together. I was 21. I had all the influx of public life and being told, ‘You should look a certain way,’ or ‘You should be a certain thing,’ or ‘Don’t eat that,’ or ‘Do this,’ or ‘Dye your hair a different color,'” The Fault in Our Stars actress recalled, explaining that Winslet sat her down, held her shoulders and, quite literally, shook her out of it.

“[She] was like, ‘No, no, that’s not who you are, this is the truth,’ and she gave me that moment,” Woodley said. “I would not be who I am today without her.”
