HBO‘s limited series The Undoing premiered to solid numbers on Sunday, putting it in line with Lovecraft Country and other recent HBO series.

The drama starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and written by David E. Kelley gathered a first-night audience of 1.4 million viewers across all platforms. (A breakdown of on-air and streaming numbers will be available Tuesday.)

That puts The Undoing on par with Lovecraft Country‘s August premiere, which also had 1.4 million viewers on its opening night. Several other HBO shows have opened in that range as well: Perry Mason had 1.7 million premiere-night viewers in June; The Outsider had 1.2 million in January; and Watchmen had 1.5 million in October 2019.

All of those shows grew exponentially over time via streaming and replays, as The Undoing presumably will too. _Lovecraft Country_‘s first episode is at 10 million viewers. The Outsider averaged 9 million viewers per episode across its season, and Watchmen clocked 7 million.

The Undoing marks a reunion for Kidman and Kelley, who worked together on Big Little Lies. Both are executive producers of the series, along with director Susanne Bier (The Night Manager); Kidman’s Blossom Films partner Per Saari; Bruna Papandrea of Made Up Stories; Stephen Garrett and Celia Costas. It’s based on the novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz.
