‘Unstoppable’ Tops DVD, Blu-ray Charts (original) (raw)

The 20th Century Fox actioner Unstoppable lived up to its name, debuting at the top of the national home video sales charts for the week ending Feb. 20.

The Denzel Washington starrer, which earned $81.4 million in U.S. theaters, easily snagged the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert and Blu-ray Disc sales charts despite a series of Presidents Day weekend price promotions that saw a handful of recent hits shoot back up the charts.

Indeed, the proliferation of such comeback discs as Walt Disney’s Toy Story 3 (No. 2 on First Alert), Warner’s Inception (No. 3) and Paramount/DreamWorks’ Shrek Forever After (No. 4) and How to Train Your Dragon (No. 5) sent the previous week’s top seller, Lionsgate’s For Colored Girls, way down to No. 16.

Aside from Unstoppable, no other new release even came up for air and placed in the First Alert top 20.

The dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart also was dominated by low-priced comeback hits, with Unstoppable followed by Inception at No. 2, Paramount/DreamWorks’ Iron Man 2 at No. 3, Warner’s The Town at No. 4 and Walt Disney’s Secretariat at No. 5. According to Nielsen data, 36% of total Unstoppable unit sales were on Blu-ray Disc.

Only on _Home Media Magazine_’s rental chart was Unstoppable stopped by the 28-day rental window 20th Century Fox imposes Netflix and Redbox, leaving the No. 1 spot to Summit Entertainment’s Red for the fourth consecutive week. Two sophomores came next, Disney’s You Again at No. 2 and Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2 at No. 3.

The highest-ranking new release was Sony Pictures’ Game of Death, which bowed at No. 7.
