Hollywood Events Face Wave of Cancellations Amid Los Angeles Fires (original) (raw)
Hollywood is going on pause while several wildfires rage throughout Los Angeles, started by dangerous high-speed winds whipping through the area on Tuesday.
L.A. premieres for Unstoppable and Wolf Man, as well as an awards season event for Emilia Pérez, were scrapped on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, red carpets for Better Man, The Pitt and On Call were also canceled. Though the winds are expected to cease by Wednesday night, the town has cleared the events calendar for the next few days out of safety and respect for those impacted by the fires raging throughout the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Pasadena, Altadena and other areas of the city.
Thursday’s premiere of The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson and set for the TCL Chinese Theatre, has been canceled; a special screening of Bleecker Street’s Love Me and A Complete Unknown x Coach dinner with star Elle Fanning have been postponed. American Cinematheque’s fourth annual Tribute to the Crafts event at the Egyptian Theatre was postponed. A special presentation of Wicked featuring a conversation with Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish scheduled for Thursday, was also canceled.
Friday’s AFI Awards, a typically starry luncheon honoring the 10 best movies and TV shows of the year, has been postponed and both Donna Langley’s Universal toast at Sunset Tower on Friday and Saturday’s BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills was scrapped. The AARP Movies for Grownups Awards set for Saturday will be postponed to a not-yet-announced date, and the Critics Choice Awards, set to take place in Santa Monica on Sunday, have been pushed two weeks to Jan. 26.
The cancellations have begun to affect next week as well, as Apple TV+’s Severance premiere in Los Angeles on Monday was canceled, with a note that “Apple is donating to support the relief efforts on the ground and our thoughts and heartfelt support remain with everyone who has been affected by these tragic fires.” Sony’s L.A. premiere of One of Them Days on Monday was also called off.
On the music front, the iHeartRadio AlterEGO concert featuring rock acts Incubus, St. Vincent, The Offspring and Cage the Elephant and scheduled for Saturday night at the Kia Forum, has been canceled.
New York events are also starting to be impacted, as American Primeval held a NYC event on Wednesday without its planned red carpet and hosted a screening and Q&A just for its cast and crew. The New York premiere of Back in Action on Thursday was canceled and a NYC tastemaker screening for Goosebumps: The Vanishing was postponed.
