Comic-Con: ‘Falling Skies’ Stars Preview “Desperate” Series Finale, Reveal Mementos They Took (original) (raw)
Things are getting grim for the remaining characters in _Falling Skies_‘ final season, and the Skitters are somehow the least of the worries.
The cast of the TNT sci-fi drama took part in a Comic-Con panel in Ballroom 20 on Friday, where they revealed that tensions between Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) and Pope (Colin Cunningham) reach their apex as the series prepares to sign off after five seasons.
“When [Tom and Pope] were adversarial, the show was really, really interesting,” Wyle said, pointing out that the series “lost a little bit of the teeth” when the characters were working together. “[But we knew] they were going to have their last go-around — it was going to come at some point. This season obviously being the last, we don’t truncate.”
Cunningham concurs, saying, “The gloves are off — if Pope was ever a pain in Mason’s butt, he becomes one here on out.”
Wyle admits that the final season has a different tone than previous ones, given the number of times that the show has switched head writers. “This is a series that has been a bit atypical over the years because each time we changed showrunners, we changed directions a bit,” he said.
The characters have continued to evolve as the end nears, which Moon Bloodgood (Ann) appreciates. “I’ve never felt like I’ve figured out Ann. It was nice to start out in a softer character but watch her become this mother,” she said, adding that the character’s path “ties up in the end really nicely.” She also said about the entire team heading into the finale: “We’re all desperate.”
Wyle discussed Tom’s changes over the years as well. “He came back a different guy this year,” Wyle said, pointing out that his character has become “a lot more cold in his thinking.”
Given the series’ high body count, Connor Jessup (Ben Mason) admitted to being “shocked” that his character is still among the living. But he added a caveat: “I can’t say that I made it to the end because that would be a spoiler — I can’t say that anyone made it to the end.”
Wyle managed to grab some mementos from the set from the last season, but he didn’t get the one he really wanted. “I took all of Tom Mason’s clothes — I took a jacket,” he said. “I wanted to take a Skitter. I don’t know if you saw last week’s episode — we had a lot of extra Skitters lying around.”
Falling Skies airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on TNT.
