Apple has unveiled a sweeping range of software upgrades at WWDC 2026, introducing the next generation of Apple Intelligence, a completely redesigned Siri AI, enhanced parental controls, and major updates across its operating systems, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27.

Speaking at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, said the company is bringing powerful new capabilities designed to make its products smarter, faster and more useful while maintaining a strong focus on user privacy.

"We're delivering the next generation of Apple Intelligence across our platforms, introducing Siri AI, a profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable and capable Siri, expanding child safety features and making our software platforms faster, more reliable and more delightful than ever before," Federighi said.

Siri AI Gets Its Biggest Upgrade Yet

The highlight of WWDC 2026 was Siri AI, Apple's most advanced virtual assistant to date. Powered by Gemini, Siri AI can understand personal context, access information across apps, analyse on-screen content, interpret images and perform actions on behalf of users.

The assistant can answer questions based on what appears on a user's screen, search across apps using personal context and retrieve up-to-date information from the web. Apple has also introduced a dedicated Siri app that can reference previous conversations for more natural interactions.

Siri will now integrate with Dynamic Island on iOS 27, making the assistant more accessible throughout the operating system.

Apple Intelligence Expands Across the Ecosystem

Apple Intelligence is being deeply integrated across Apple's ecosystem with new AI-powered features designed to simplify everyday tasks.

The Camera app gains a new Siri mode with Visual Intelligence, allowing users to point their camera at objects, food, documents and locations to receive instant information and ask follow-up questions.

The Photos app receives new AI editing tools such as Cleanup, Extend and Spatial Reframe, while Safari introduces AI-powered tab organisation and webpage monitoring.

Other additions include natural-language shortcut creation, smarter Messages and Calendar experiences, advanced writing tools, custom image generation through Image Playground and AI enhancements for HomeKit cameras, AirPods, Maps and Health.

Apple also confirmed that some Apple Intelligence features running on server-side models will be subject to daily usage limits.

New Child Safety and Parental Control Features

Apple is introducing a range of new tools aimed at helping parents create safer digital experiences for children.

Parents can now set up child accounts with age-appropriate protections enabled by default. Through Setup Assistant, they can choose which apps their children can access and maintain control over future app installations.

Communication Safety features have also been expanded, allowing parents to approve new contacts and activate automatic interventions when explicit or violent content is detected in messages.

Faster Performance Across Apple Devices

Apple says it has significantly improved system performance through enhancements to memory management, CPU scheduling, networking and display rendering.

According to the company, apps can now launch up to 30% faster, newly captured photos appear in the Photos app up to 70% faster, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80% faster than before.

File transfers between iPads and external storage devices are also up to five times faster, bringing performance closer to Finder on the Mac.

Refined Design and User Experience

Apple has refined its Liquid Glass design language to improve readability and visual clarity by better diffusing complex content behind interface elements.

Toolbars have been redesigned for improved structure and text legibility, while sidebars now extend to the edges of app windows for a more immersive appearance. Sidebar icons have regained colour coding, making apps easier to identify, and window corner radii have been standardised across macOS for a more consistent look and feel.

Developer betas for all operating systems are available starting today, while public betas will be released next month. Apple plans to roll out the final software updates later this year, with Siri AI launching initially in beta in English before expanding to additional languages.
