Sir Ian Holm has joined the cast of the Hughes brother's From Hell.

Sir Nigel Hawthorne was forced to quit the production due to illness.

Sir Ian Holm has joined the cast of the Hughes brothers' From Hell.¿ Holm will replace Sir Nigel Hawthorne who was forced to quit the production due to illness, says today's Hollywood Reporter.

The 20th Century Fox production is a "Jack the Ripper" tale, based on the 10-volume graphic novel series by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.¿ From Hell, (screenplay adapted by Terry Hughes) tells the story of Scotland Yard detective Fredrick Abberlines (Johnny Depp) and his investigation of the mysterious Whitechapel murders. As the murders continue, Abberlines grows closer to the shocking truth, uncovering a vast political conspiracy that extends to the top of the British empire. If you've ever wondered where the title comes from, the infamous letters to the London Times, supposedly from the killer, were all signed "From Hell."¿ Creepy huh?

Holm (Joe Gould's Secret, The 5th Element, Alien) will star opposite Johnny Depp, Heather Graham, Robbie Coltrane, and Ian Richardson.¿ Sir Ian also appears as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings trilogy.

Principle photography on From Hell began June 5th, in Prague, Czech Republic (which will double as Victorian London), but none of Hawthorne's scenes had been shot.

Holm and Hawthorne are thespians with similar filmographies, who both became successful actors later in life.¿ We certainly hope Sir Hawthorne's illness isn't serious and wish him the best.¿ In fact, this seems like a good time for me to cast my vote for Hawthorne as Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter films. He's an incredibly talented actor who meets author J.K. Rowling's description of Dumbledore perfectly!¿ Hawthorne has just the right twinkle in his eye to portray the wizened old wizard Dumbledore. He's even got the slightly crooked nose!
