This is one of the best productions of "Waiting for Godot" I have seen; McKern and Wall are perfect as the dual protagonists. I am relying on memory because, although I have seen the production twice, both times were in the 70s, on TV.
Beckett's black humour is closely akin to that of some of the best comic performers of the late music hall and early movies. He loved his work to be portrayed by actors of this era, as in the short "Film" where he personally directed Buster Keaton. The razor-sharp timing and clown-like stylised movements of Wall and McKern are essential for delivery of the terse, pared-to-the- bone "Godot" script. In the "black-gone-green" outfits of silent movie comedians and the austere setting of the countryside of occupied France, Wall and McKern are completely at home.
I've been looking for a copy of this production since 1980...anyone have a video?
