Ranthambore in Rajasthan is primarily known for its national park by the same name that is home to tigers, crocodiles and leopards among other species of animals. The wildlife reserve was in fact a royal hunting ground and is home to the Ranthambore Fort that is situated on a hilltop. Its other attraction is the Ranthambore Festival that is scheduled to take place this year from January 27 to 29. The festival is one a kind and has something for all. From folk music and dance performances under the moonlit sky to pop-up souks, cookouts, wildlife safaris, movie screenings and discussions, it has something for everyone. The weather is perfect and is the time of the festival as it is a long weekend thanks to Republic Day being on Thursday. If you haven’t made plans for the long weekend and are willing to call in sick to work on Friday, we suggest you pack your bags and head to Ranthambore to attend this soulful festival this weekend. The venue
Unlike other music festivals that usually take place in a ground or open space, the venue for Ranthambore Festival is the regal Nahargarh Palace. You can reach the palace by flying to Jaipur and then taking a cab from there. It will take you three hours by road and the fare will be approximately Rs 2,500. If you are taking the train, get off at Sawai Madhopur Station which is 10 minutes away from the palace.
Artists performing
Ranthambore Festival will bring together some of the best folk artists in the country under one roof. These include names like Mallika Sarabhai, Zila Khan, Maati Baani, Rajeev Raja, Ustad Gafoor Khan, Kailash Dan Ji, Ugam Dan Ji, Nagga Khan and several others. Apart from these, there will be talks given by renowned speakers like Saravana Kumar, Sandesh Kadur, Dharmendra Khandal and Kartick Satyanarayan.
Highlights
There are several workshops and experiences lined up for you at the festival as you have three days in hand. The celebrations begin by 12 noon on January 27 and while there are a number of things to attend, here are a few highlights of the Ranthambore Festival 2017. Remember, there will be multiple things taking place simultaneously so you will have to pick and choose what to attend.
January 27, 2017
2-3 pm: Wildlife photography workshop with Aditya Dicky Singh at FirstStone Amphitheatre
5-7 pm: Hot air ballooning experience at the Palace grounds
8.30-10 pm: Dance performance by Mallika Sarabhai and Darpana Academy at Hathikund Stage
January 28, 2017
6.30-7.30 am: Morning folk music session by Jameel Khan, Manjoor Khan and more at Palace terrace
2-3 pm: Voice meditation workshop with Tritha Sinha
4-5 pm: Folk music performance by Jangda showcase at Annexe lawns
6-7 pm: Kalaripayattu performance showcase at Hathikund stage

10-11 am: Yoga meditation workshop at Palace terrace
11 am – 12.30 pm: Wildlife film screening at Annexe lawns
12.30-1 pm: Closing ceremony at FirstStone amphitheatre
Passes
There are different categories of passes available for the festival that range from Rs 12,000 to Rs 51,750 for all the three days with accommodation on single, twin and triple sharing basis.
