The Anne Hathaway- and Nicholas Galitzine-starring film is still very sexy, but Showalter explains how some clever tweaks turned it into a "Notting Hill"-esque outing that audiences already adore.
"A part of me loves the idea of having a huge worldwide theatrical hit," the Oscar winner said.
"It was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it," the "Idea of You" star recalled.
The adaptation of the viral 2017 novel offers poignant commentary in a fresh take on the rom-com genre.
Ahead of the film's SXSW premiere, Galitzine wants it known that his character in the fan-fiction adaptation is his own unique person.
