San Andrés Vacation at several beaches

Despite being little more than six miles from the island capital of Santa Cruz, the fishing village of San Andrés was, until 1940, only accessible by a footpath. But the construction of a new coastal road opened up the area.

Today, the village, which lies at the foot of the Anaga Mountains, has a population of some 2,500 and forms part of the wider municipality of Santa Cruz.

The quiet charm of San Andrés was threatened by the march of tourism back in the 1980s, that was until the Spanish courts intervened to put a stop to large-scale development and the village retains its original Canarian character, though it still has its share of hotels, holiday villas and apartments.

The stretch of coast beyond San Andrés has some of the island's best beaches, including Playa de las Teresitas, which was artificially created some 30 years ago by the island government after importing 4,000,000 bags of sand from the Sahara desert to create what is still to this day one of the most beautiful beaches on Tenerife.
The beach has good facilities, with a café, showers and plenty of parking. Palm trees provide shade and beach activities include volleyball and aerobics.

Not far from San Andrés is the much quieter Playa de las Gaviotas, a beach of white volcanic sand near Igueste de San Andrés. Nudism is tolerated on this beach, it's an inofficial nudist beach.
