In October 1974 the Grateful Dead held five hometown concerts at Winterland in San Francisco that preceded their drastically scaled back touring which lasted until mid-1976. The Winterland shows were filmed and portions of the performances were showcased in the 1977 documentary feature The Grateful Dead Movie. A 40th anniversary one-night-only screening of The Grateful Dead Movie will take place on April 20 at theaters around the country and this edition of Sunday Cinema presents live show footage from the famed Winterland run.

The compilation of videos below features highlights from three of the five hometown gigs, as excerpts from the Dead’s October 17, 18 and 19 performances are presented (footage of the shows on October 16 and 20 are not included). From the 17th there’s a lengthy second set “The Other One” sequence as well as the first set pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider.” A set one “Sugaree” and first half closing “Weather Report Suite” from the October 18 show is included as is an improvisation-filled “Dark Star” from that evening’s second set.

The set two opening “Uncle John’s Band” from October 19 is featured as well as that night’s first set “Scarlet Begonias.” Watch officially shared footage from the Winterland via the Grateful Dead below:
