Research | Department of Mathematics (original) (raw)
King’s is one of the leading centres for mathematics research in the UK. We aim to foster a vibrant and innovative environment, with many researchers working across interdisciplinary collaborations both internally within King’s and externally.
Our research covers a broad range of sub-disciplines in applied and pure mathematics, including analytics, disordered systems, geometry, financial mathematics, statistics, probability and theoretical physics and more. We explore new ways of looking at familiar issues and develop new tools to solve complex problems.
We partner across disciplinary boundaries within the faculty, including with computer scientists and physicists, as well as with research institutes in the health faculties, including the Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics. Externally we work with the Francis Crick Institute and industrial partners such as EDF Research, the Pensions Policy Institute, Unilever and more.
Our research groups
Our research groups cover a wide range of fields within the discipline. This includes applied mathematics such as disordered systems, statistics and financial mathematics; and pure mathematics through research groups on analysis, geometry, number theory and probability. We also have a highly renowned theoretical physics group.
Discover PhD study
We welcome postgraduate research students from around the world to join our world-leading community of researchers. PhD students are vital to advancing innovation and cutting-edge discovery, and work under the guidance of internationally renowned experts from our department.
Our internationally renowned department fosters an innovative and intimate research environment. We welcome PhD students from around the world working on a broad range of topics.
Fellowships
We welcome applications to research fellowships from candidates outside of the department, as well as internal researchers. We encourage expressions of interest from underrepresented groups, including women and minority ethnic candidates. A range of fellowships are on offer, including from the EPSRC and ERC research councils, the Royal Society and more.
