Font Installation Instructions

Languagegeek provides, free of charge, a number of quality fonts for Native languages across North America and the world. The Aboriginal Series of fonts contains a full host of characters for languages using syllabics, Cherokee, and Roman orthography, and was designed specifically for on-screen viewing.

All new Languagegeek fonts are high quality OpenType fonts. This means that with the correct software, your typing will look more precise and professional. These fonts have built into their programming the means by which ligatures (combinations of characters) and accents position themselves correctly. Furthermore, each font is Unicode friendly, meaning that the encoding is standard world wide. Please see the links above in this paragraph for more information on how to apply this technology.

There are also some new Languagegeek fonts which have been designed specifically for individual languages. This way, the unique characteristics of each language can be accommodated. Several fonts come in African versions. These are identical to the plain version except the capital Ŋ is of the African variety.

Each font has been “zipped” to reduce the file size and assure a clean download. If you do not have an unzip utility on your computer, an internet search should turn up several free downloads. If you need help with unzipping the fonts, please email me.

More Syllabics Characters Added!

With the release of Unicode 5.2 in October 2009, there are 80 new Canadian Syllabics characters supported by the global standards organization, the Unicode Consortium. This means that languages such as Cree, Ojibway, and Blackfoot syllabics can now be consistently and accurately represented on computers. The proposal submitted by Languagegeek and Michael Everson has been implemented in 5.2. Thanks to those Native language speakers and linguists who helped with this process over the past few years. In the list of fonts available for download here at Languagegeek, those fonts with the notice Unicode 5.2 have been updated with the new characters. I plan on updating all the fonts and keyboards here in the near future.

Download Digohweli (FREE version 1.7.0) About the font. If you prefer to use only the old-form DO (Λ), please download and install the Old Do Digohweli font. For occasional use of the old-form DO, the standard Digohweli font has (Λ) in Stylistic Set 01 and as a Historical Alternate. Digohweli is not covered by the general Languagegeek license. Digohweli
