The collection in the La Trobe University Herbarium (LTB) consists of more than 25,000 vascular plant specimens, mostly from Victoria, as well as a significant collection of algal specimens. The Herbarium's flowering plant collection is particularly diverse, with specimens that reflect research strengths of past and present staff members and research students.

The Herbarium is used by students, staff and professional botanists. It is available for use most weekdays, however the curator must be contacted before visiting.

The Herbarium has the support of the Atlas of Living Australia and the National Herbarium of Victoria for this project, and has received external funding from the Bjarne K Dahl Trust.

Volunteer opportunities

The Herbarium welcomes student volunteers to assist with specimen curation. Volunteering provides opportunities to learn more about the Victorian Flora, gain georeferencing and data entry skills (using the latest in database software designed for living collections), and learn about herbarium management.
