Through international and domestic service learning trips, Alternative Break Program gives students the opportunity to not only learn more about social issues and connect with like-minded peers, but also to see how their service can leave a lasting impression on communities around the world. ABP works with various non-profit partner organizations that are dedicated to the specific social issue a trip focuses on. Students complete trips during Indiana University's academic breaks (Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, Spring Break).

🌍 ABP Newsletter: ABP in NYC 🌍 Did you know that in 2023, around 18 million American households (47.4 million individuals) were food insecure? Food insecure households are defined by the US Department of Agriculture as “uncertain of having or unable to acquire enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food”. New York in particular has significantly high rates of food insecurity, with 39% of individuals in the Bronx experiencing this issue in their daily lives. Looking at the state as a whole, around 1 in 4 adults in New York experience food insecurity. These adults are also more susceptible to several chronic diseases, including hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and more, according to the New York Department of Health. This is where Hunger Free America (HFA) comes into the picture. HFA is a nonprofit, national organization based in New York that provides both direct service and advocacy for people experiencing food insecurity. They were founded in 1983 to provide support beyond that offered by a traditional soup kitchen and to coordinate the efforts of various emergency food providers. Since then, they have expanded their focus to legislative advocacy and be national service participants to end hunger. HFA uses their resources to help create policies and programs that are necessary in order to end domestic hunger such as directly helping families facing food insecurity secure government benefits and access to private food resources. During our ABP trip to NYC, we will be working directly with Hunger Free America to learn more about the nuanced issue of food insecurity and what can be done to combat it. Students will get a chance to visit HFA headquarters and learn more about the organization’s mission, as well as visit various food pantries and kitchens to do hands-on service work and form genuine connections with the local community. Anna Smith, a participant from the 2023 edition of this trip says it was a “fulfilling opportunity to learn and engage with communities outside of (her) own.” Reflecting on her time spent at several food pantries and rehabilitation centers across NYC, she says “it was incredible to see the amount of work being done at each center and to be able to give (her) time to something so important”. Overall, our NYC trip is like no other, providing students with the opportunity to directly create an impact and engage with the subject of food insecurity firsthand. 🌍 ABP Newsletter: The Value of Experiential Learning 🌍 Hands-on learning, like that which is offered through ABP’s service learning trips, is a powerful way to engage with real-world issues and develop a deep understanding of social challenges. By immersing participants in diverse communities around the country and globe, these experiential learning opportunities allow individuals to witness firsthand the complexities of topics like food insecurity, sustainable agriculture, civil rights and more. This direct engagement goes beyond classroom learning, as participants interact with local communities, understand their unique struggles and strengths, and contribute to meaningful projects. This approach both expands participants' perspectives and develops a sense of empathy and a commitment to social impact. The experiential learning opportunities provided by ABP also allow trip participants to develop valuable skills such as communication, collaboration, adaptability, resilience and critical thinking. A great example of ABP’s hands-on approach can be seen through our yearly NYC trip which covers the subject of food insecurity. During the trip, students have worked closely with Hunger Free America, which, according to their website, is “a nonpartisan, national nonprofit group working to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food.” Students visited the Hunger Free America headquarters, where they were given an in-depth tour to understand the organization’s initiatives and impact in combating hunger. This visit allowed students to see firsthand the strategies and operations involved in addressing food insecurity on a large scale. In addition, the group volunteered at several local food pantries and kitchens, where they participated directly in the distribution of food to those in need. At the end of each day, participants would sit down and discuss and reflect on what they had learned. Through this volunteer work, students were able to engage with the community, learn about the challenges faced by those experiencing food insecurity, and gain a greater appreciation for the importance of grassroots efforts in fighting hunger. Through these engaging experiences, the Alternative Break Program aims to inspire a lifelong commitment to service, empathy, and positive change in the world. Cultural Preservation: By engaging with local communities and their cultures, eco-tourism helps preserve traditional lifestyles and customs. Tourists are educated about the cultural heritage of the places they visit, promoting a deeper appreciation for native cultures. Educational Value: Eco-tourism can allow tourists to develop a better understanding of sustainable living and encourage them to apply eco-friendly practices to their daily lives, leading to a more informed and environmentally conscious global community. Here are some ways you can practice eco-tourism on your next trip: 1. Choose eco-friendly accommodations wherever you go! 2. Go local! Buy local products, hire local guides, and eat at locally-owned restaurants. 3. Respect natural habitats; don't litter, vandalize, or disturb wildlife! 4.
