🎉 Celebrating #NationalNursePractitionerWeek and 50 Years of ANCC Certification! Trailblazer Bonnie Todd was among Washington’s first five nurse practitioners to earn certification in 1974. Her dedication to excellence in pediatric care helped define and elevate the nurse practitioner (NP) role in healthcare. She overcame adversity in her pursuit of advanced practice, challenging norms and advocating for NP recognition and the highest continuous education standards. “In those early days, people assumed this role had always existed, but it hadn’t,” Bonnie reflects. "I lived through the 'cowboy era'—it was our job to sway public opinion, to prove this was not only a necessary role but one that elevated patient care standards.” As a mentor, Bonnie has nurtured the next generation of NPs, guiding others on the path she helped to forge. The American Nurses Association (ANA) launched the Racial Reckoning Think Tank 6 months ago to develop actionable strategies in support of ANA’s commitment to its organizational Journey of Racial Reconciliation. Today was our final, in-person meeting. Amazingly important work, even more so today than ever. Its been a privilege to work with Dr. Debra A. Toney together as Co-Chairs to support the process, provide guidance, and impart insight to the Think Tank’s participants.
