We prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.
About us
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Each day, thousands of people – people just like you – provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world. We roll up our sleeves and donate time, money and blood. We learn or teach life-saving skills so our communities can be better prepared when the need arises. We do this every day because the Red Cross is needed - every day.

- You belong. You matter. ❤️ We strive to provide opportunities for our staff and volunteers to use their authentic, unique voices in ways that will strengthen their workplace experience and our lifesaving mission. One of the ways we do this is through our Team Member Resource Groups (TMRGs). Our TMRGs are intentional spaces for all Red Crossers across different identities to have an opportunity to express themselves, gain professional development experience and be a pivotal part of organizational goals. As we approach National Employee Resource Group Day, we want to celebrate all of our TMRGs and the Red Crossers who make them vibrant and impactful every day!
- This mother-daughter duo joined forces to help people in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. 🥹 Jennie and Jezzalyn Ringler are volunteers from the American Red Cross Minnesota & Dakotas Region. They’ve been delivering hundreds of meals from one of our emergency response vehicles to impacted communities and distribution sites. Jezzalyn recently became a Red Cross volunteer and is on her first deployment with her mom. Her favorite part of being on the Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) team — aside from spending the day with her mom — is meeting people and hearing their stories. “We’ve got regulars, we see them every day,” Jezzalyn said. “We get to hear about their lives, about their recovery. Many of them are veterans, too.” Contrary to her daughter, Jennie is no stranger to responding to disasters. She’s been volunteering and serving as an ERV driver since 2011. “You get a groove going and you keep it that way,” Jennie said. The Ringlers have been serving at least 100 meals a day at a community care center in Buncombe County. This is a place where people can do their laundry, take a shower, pick up supplies like jugs of potable water, and, of course, enjoy a hot meal. We deeply appreciate their dedication and teamwork in supporting those in need.
- After spending three years as a 911 dispatcher, Alisha Chambliss was inspired by her mother to join the Red Cross, who also worked there and shared how rewarding it was. “That feeling of helping people and feeling like my job actually meant something was something I liked,” Alisha said. Alisha joined our Hero Care Center in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and supports military members, veterans and their families. She plays a key role in helping service members receive communications from their loved ones about births, deaths or other emergencies. “We’re trying to help these service members get home to help their family with these emergencies and give that support,” Alisha said. "It really just makes me feel good when people say, ‘Thank you for your service.’"
- It takes a village to support communities after disasters strike, and we’re grateful to the 275+ Bank of America employees who generously volunteered their time to help people in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. These employee volunteer groups joined our disaster workers on the ground in Asheville and surrounding areas to help conduct damage assessments for over 5,000 homes impacted by the storm. Disaster assessment volunteers play a crucial role in the recovery process following a disaster like Helene. Teams have spent hours each day walking through neighborhoods, including remote and hard-to-reach locations, to survey damage to homes. The data they gather helps the Red Cross determine the extent of the damage, identify where the greatest needs are located, and connect communities to recovery resources. “Hurricane Helene severely impacted Western North Carolina, leaving communities devastated and residents in need,” said David Dowd, president of Bank of America Asheville. “We are grateful to the American Red Cross for providing much-needed support including shelter, food, financial assistance and relief supplies.” Bank of America has been an annual disaster relief donor for over 20 years and is currently a member of the Annual Disaster Giving Program at the 1millionlevel.InspiredbyHurricanesHeleneandMilton,theyrecentlycontributedanadditional1 million level. Inspired by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, they recently contributed an additional 1millionlevel.InspiredbyHurricanesHeleneandMilton,theyrecentlycontributedanadditional2 million for disaster relief. Beyond financial contributions and volunteer support, Bank of America hosts Red Cross blood drives, provides employee giving and matching opportunities, and has donated first aid kits.

Bill owns Buildout Pros, LLC, a veteran-owned construction company that works on building and remodeling projects across several industries. One project that has brought him and his team great pride is building Red Cross blood donation centers. The American Red Cross provides about 40% of the blood supply in the U.S. — a statistic Bill takes to heart. “We’d like to think as a partner with the American Red Cross, we’ve helped that cause," Bill said. "We help by getting these donor centers up and running as quickly as possible and getting the donors in the door.” When Bill thinks of the Red Cross, it's not just lifesaving blood that comes to mind, but lifesaving training, too. He served as a U.S. Marine for 11 years and remembers being trained in CPR by the Red Cross. Bill feels connected to our mission and values our work with military organizations. "It shows their commitment to collaboration and support for those who have served," Bill said. "They support the values instilled in veterans during their time, like resilience and an aligned value between both veterans and the Red Cross — service." Bill runs his business and works with our mission alongside his family, who also have Red Cross ties. His son and project manager, Will Westmoreland, is a blood donor. His daughter, Shelby Westmoreland, manages the businesses' marketing and sales and has fond memories of volunteering at blood drives. "The first response that the Red Cross provides is something that draws us to the mission," Shelby said. "You’ll see this throughout history during any time of need. The Red Cross is there." We are grateful for Bill's service and his partnership through our Supplier Diversity Program. This initiative helps us strengthen our lifesaving mission by partnering with business owners of diverse backgrounds — such as our veterans — who represent the communities we serve. #VeteransDay #VeteranOwnedBusiness
- While Sean Day was serving in the US Army he received unexpected news. “I remember when I was in Germany and getting a Red Cross message in regard to my grandfather's illness," Sean said. "I was able to come back to the States and see him before he passed." Sean received this message from our Hero Care Center, which works with the military to get service members home during emergencies. After 20 years of service, Sean's journey came full circle when he applied for a job at the Hero Care Center, where he's been working since 2019. “Every case that we’re able to help somebody, it always makes me feel good,” he said. “So, whether that be just to try and get somebody home to see their child’s birth or whether it be to bring somebody home so they can, you know, say the last goodbyes to grandpa — it definitely makes you feel good.” This Veterans Day, we honor Sean and all our veterans who continue to serve their communities with compassion. Thank you for your service!
- Just six months after getting married, Jim McBride suffered a heart attack at his local YMCA. Now, he's a lifeguard at that same YMCA, working alongside the three people who saved his life. "I am so thankful every day for how lucky I am," Jim said. "Had this happened anywhere else, I would have been gone by the time the ambulance came." After swimming laps in the pool, Jim hopped in the hot tub. Gabe DiEmidio and Peter McMonagle, new lifeguards and high school sophomores at the time, noticed something was wrong — Jim's head was about to slip under the water. Peter quickly pulled Jim out of the water and started CPR. Gabe pressed the nearby emergency button to call first responders and grabbed an AED. A third lifeguard, Carlotta Myers, had just clocked in and rushed over to help. After his heart attack, Jim needed five hours of emergency surgery and spent a week in the hospital. But because of the seamless actions and specialized skills of the lifeguards on duty that day, he is alive and well. Gabe, Peter and Carlotta all received Lifesaving Awards from the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania to honor their heroic efforts. Peter hopes that this story will inspire others — no matter their profession — to sign up for a CPR class. "It's a good skill to have," Peter said. "You never know when you are going to need it." #LifesavingAwards
- “We all have love to give, and we all have blood.” Adam Greczkowski is a member of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC and donated blood for the first time at the chorus’ blood drive, celebrating one year since the FDA eliminated blood donation policies based on sexual orientation. “It feels so cool to be part of history,” Adam said. “And it feels really important to participate so that we get more people helping other people.” The blood drive was hosted at St. Thomas’ Parish in Washington, D.C., where both first-time and dedicated blood donors turned out to donate lifesaving blood for patients in need. “I started donating when I was in high school in 1968 and I’m almost to 40 gallons,” Reverend Linda Kaufman said. For many of the attendees, being able to donate blood and help save lives was an unforgettable milestone. “I am finally accepted into another part of the human experience,” said Paul Heins, associate conductor for the chorus. “It was important for me to be a part of the community and to donate at a time when we can finally do so.” We’re excited that blood donation rules have changed to be more inclusive while keeping the blood supply safe. There is still work to be done, and we will continue to work in support of further changes. ❤️
